These armor modules are said to be those new Graphene based ceramic plates that feature incredible protective values. Like 20mm of it can protect against 12,7mm HMGs, 30mm from 14,5mm and 50mm stops even 35mm autocannon rounds. The manufacturer said that they are making SAPI plates out of it, even.

Here, a 20mm plate that has stopped a 12,7mm round at 100m.

Global Times reported it as well, in relation to the Z-10.

Documentary on the development of Z10 via Beast

A documentary development of Z-10 gunship.
According to him
The gunship is very quiet and agile. Engine is 100% made in China. It suffer the same fate as Indian LCA as increase of combat subsystem added in, result in helo overweight. In order to ensure thrust to weight ratio. A massive weight reduction was carried out during its development which included major redesign. Armour and combat capabilities were not compromised. Combat payload remained the same but range increase as a result. Z-10 is the longest range gunship compare to others like Apache, Cobra, Roovalik, Mi-28 , Ka-50 and Tiger.

During avidart competition, Z-10 beat Mi-28 and Ka-50 in terms of combat effectiveness like speed of hunting target and accuracy shot. The chief designer claimed Z-10 is rank top 3 gunship in the world in terms of overall combat capabilities.

The bolt on armor on the Z-10 definitely does not engender confidence in its armor protection, nor in its engine power. That's the only logical conclusion.

I am trying to figure out what it's actually protecting. They don't seem to be around the flight crew.

I would think/hope that an armoured ‘bathtub’ crew protection would have come as standard on the Z10.

The new add-on armour modules are where the avionics and displays are situated, so maybe the designers didn’t armour those areas as heavily to save weight, and are not rectifing that earlier compromise.

Ye and the add ons on the m1a2 doesn’t engender confidence in it’s armor or engine power either. Very logical conclusion. /s

You got this new plate that can resist auto cannon fire for minimal weight. The question is; why WOULDN’T you add it. It’s free protection.
