All this talk makes it sound like there will at most be one more convention carrier before the PLAN shifts to nuclear carriers, and we are unlikely to see 2 STOBARs -> 2 conventional CATOBARs -> nuclear CATOBARs, etc.

Very detailed & informative analysis of existing rumors & photos by fzgfzy:

Do I understand that correctly: the upper structure represents the 2nd Chinese aircraft carrier during the construction phase, the lower structure the first known module of the 3rd Chinese aircraft carrier?

And the red frame painted by me in the image of @fzgfzy represents which part of the hull forms this first known module?

Then the 3rd Chinese aircraft carrier gets a ship's hull that is very similar to the 2nd Chinese aircraft carrier, but mounted in a different way?

He wasn't illustrating the similarity between the 002 and 003's design, he was using 002's existing models to explain 003's construction. For 002, Dalian first assembled the propulsion compartments (in red) then attached the anti-mine/anti-torpedo belt (in purple). JNCX took a different approach and assembled an entire super-module consisting of both the propulsion compartment and the side belts.

If 002 and 003's hullforms turn out to be similar, I wouldn't be surprised. But that was not what fzgfzy wanted to express in his graphic.

Yeah, I would be surprised if at this stage he would have the info to make comparative, "to-scale" claims between 003 and 002.

In any case, it seems like fzgfzy is definitely confirming that this big module is for 003, so I suppose we can call late July, 2018 as the equivalent of late April 2017 for 002.

.... now we just need to wait for 003 modules to come together in a way where it fully 100% confirms it is a carrier beyond anyone's doubt (flight deck etc), and @PanAsian can change his display picture

Thank you. I have to ask, because I can not read the chinese characters and can only relay on the pictures/drawings.

If the picture of the module of the 3rd carrier is 1:1 correct, the two towers left and right are not part of the hangar, but the outside structure of the 3rd and 2nd deck below hangar level (the hangar deck counted as main deck in US-Navy-style). They will be filled with more structure in the middle later, mostly living space for the crew.

I'm surprised that we're nearing the commissioning of the CV-17 and on the cusp of the assembly of two Type 003 vessels and yet we haven't heard anything about a Batch 3 J-15 or a new variant. Nothing suggests that they've been built and are undergoing land-based training, either.

Let's not jump the gun here. I don't think we have solid evidence of two carriers being simultaneously constructed yet.

We have seen a new variant with a new nose gear for catapult launch. Land-based training will start two or three years before deck training and that is five to seven years away.
