Shenyang FC-31 / J-31 Fighter Demonstrator

I think the future of carrier aviation, as far as the PLAN is concerned, is going to have stealthy cruise missiles hit the most dangerous targets; then have stealthy drones doing the high risk strike missions; while 5th gen manned fighters provide top cover against enemy fighters, and maybe act as stealthy DEAD to take out any mobile SAMs that light up too close to the drones unexpectedly.

It’s one thing when you are bullying weak nations who haven’t a prayer to fight back, in which case stealths dropping cheaper, short range smaller PGMs is the most cost effective; but when faced with pear and near-pear opponents with assets every bit as good as your own, every tiny edge might be the difference between mission accomplished or death and defeat.

That is one of the main reasons I have always favoured the J20 over the J31.

If the job of naval stealth fighters is combat and defend against other stealth fighters the size of your complement will matter as much as kinematic ability. We don’t know how the J-31 compares to the J-20 in kinematics, but a larger complement will be better than a smaller complement at spotting and apprehending stealthy adversaries. Once a stealth fighter engages it will give its position away. That’s not a great situation to be outnumbered in.

Saw this on Weibo today, not sure if it has been posted.

Man it's like someone PSed the F22 and F35 together and made it smaller.....

The focus isn't the image but rather the text that came along with it:

群里大佬刚才亮了文件,其中鹘鹰被称为YF-21,另一个大佬还表示该机被口头称为YF-31,太骚了吧
Translation: "Big brother of the group has opened the file (???). The Gyrfalcon is named the "YF-21". Another person verbally called it the "YF-31".

My translation is obviously off so please contribute. (

Does anybody know how credible/authoritative "DS大彪" is? He has made some recent claims about the FC-31 project (

I can't translate this so if someone could help out that would be good.

Some folks are interpreting it as a claim that the PLAN/PLAAF has purchased the FC-31.

He's an admin at Dingsheng. I don't believe he is an insider himself but as an admin, he definitely communicates closely with them.

His above post is saying the PLAAF has picked up the FC-31 project also. The tone is one of feigned shock in mockery of SAC deriders.

DId you pick up that patronizing tone from the usage of the "doge" meme (what is that supposed to be anyways)?

Not really, the translation for his post is something like: "f*ck me, the PLAAF is also supposedly.... those horrid SACers".

And then in the comments he says "if true, it must be an SACer pulling strings to pressure the PLAAF" followed by a doge.

All in all, he's being strongly sarcastic.
