I haven't been following the 055 that closely but it's the first 055 stern shot I've seen here, I thought that was what's special about the photo.

The increased number of bridge windows also makes the ship look more substantial, almost somber looking and reminiscent of armored bridges on WWII-era battleships. The elongated bow section with a subtle flare just after the pointed forebeak, coupled with that swooping 'waistline' from end to end, too evokes battleships and battlecruisers of old, at least to my eyes.

Impressive indeed, but it would impress me even further if the Type 055 is superseded by a Kirov sized design, now THAT would be something that will be awe inspiring.
The PLAN can say whatever it wants, but the Type 055 is to my eyes a cruiser and any attempts to classify it otherwise would be a disservice to it.

Also, a 21st century "cruiser" is just a destroyer operated by people with naming insecurities.
