China launched its latest comprehensive marine research vessel, the Dong Fang Hong 3, at the Jiangnan Shipyard in Shanghai on Tuesday.

With an overall length of 103.8 meters and width of 18m, the vessel can navigate a continuous sailing distance of 15,000 nautical miles (27,780 kilometers).

The Dong Fang Hong 3, a cooperative project between No. 708 Research Institute of China State Shipbuilding Co. (CSSC) and Ocean University of China, is equipped with the most comprehensive scientific expedition functions.

“For a comprehensive research vessel, its major task focuses on scientific expedition, and for China, observation is now the main target of scientific expedition,” said No. 708 Research Institute's Wu Gang, the chief designer of the vessel.

It carries advanced systems of detection and experiment analysis and can conduct large-scope, multidisciplinary and multiple-marine-element observation, as well as atmospheric, water body and undersea sampling and detection.

The research vessel is also a base for cultivating high-level marine talents and a platform that integrates science, education and innovation, said Zhao Jun, the chief engineer of the vessel from Ocean University of China.

Once put into service, Dong Fang Hong 3, together with three other existing vessels of Ocean University of China, will form the only university expedition fleet in the country that is capable of conducting comprehensive scientific research in near-shore, off-shore and deep sea areas.

These “soft” ships are very important

They show Chinese presence without warships which can send wrong message

But it’s a research ship also advancing the country

Good going

Deep sea exploration and drilling is the next frontier of Chinese shipping industry It is very vital part of Shipyard Right now this field is dominated by the Korean, Finland,Scotland and Gulf of Mexico
But China is advancing rapidly It is a must if you want energy independent
SCS is yet to be exhaustively explore it is vital for China to master this industry
This video tell the story how China independently developed this field With english subtitle
How the western company try to keep the secret and exclude Chinese personnel from participating any technical discussion

China continues to dominate the world shipbuilding industry via capturing 40% of world new contracts 2017. The world total new contracts 2017 stand at 23.3 million CGT, and the portion won by Chinese shipbuilders are 9.2 million CGT.

South Korea, with 6.4 million CGT new orders, keeps the No.2 ranking; Japan, 2.0 million CGT, ranks at No.3.

Look like a compact genset for ship but steam powered

On January 17, the first domestic largest capacity marine turbine generator set, independently designed by CSIC 704 and with full intellectual property rights, was successfully loaded to 110%. The unit runs smoothly and the performance index meets the expected target. It announces the initial victory of this type of turbo-generator research and development, which indicates that our country has mastered the core technology of marine high-power and medium-pressure turbo-generator research and development so that the high-power steam turbine for ships Generating unit made a major breakthrough in technology, successfully entered the 20MW-class era.

The project has a variety of special requirements such as limited capacity, limited function and low noise. The power is several times of the full power of China's existing marine generating units. Compared with the most advanced power generating units in Europe and the United States, the power is large-capacity System of the core equipment. It is of great importance to develop complete electric propulsion technology and to develop a complete set of equipment. The project development is of great significance.

This seems to be a rather strange announcement given the QC-280 at 28MW? power output is already fully indigenized and should have put China in the "20MW-class era" several years ago.

The news is about (electricity) generation, turbine primary mover plus electricity generator. I think the work in this report is focused on the combination a compact generator for ships with a turbine.
