Why isn't the Ford class IEP?

The main benefit of IEP is quietness, so that makes you less detectable by subs and for that reason, is most suited for ASW ships. That said the QE class does have IEP. But in my opinion, the question of IEP vs. conventional shaft drives also has the issue of the efficiency of power transmission from the engines to the propeller. Is it really more efficient than conventional shaft driven systems? Converting mechanical energy to electrical energy then back to mechanical energy might entail more loss of energy efficiency than direct from mechanical to mechanical output, even accounting for energy loss due to friction from transmissions. On a carrier or a large ship, using IEP might end up making the ship slower than faster, and you need speed on a carrier to give planes a leg up on lift off. If you are willing to sacrifice some speed for less vulnerability to submarines, you can consider this a welcome trade off. If the designers manage to reduce energy loss and improve drive efficiency to comparable to shaft driven systems, then the speed trade off might be minimal enough to be acceptable in exchange for significant quietness in speed. There is also the question of energy efficiency too whether running IEP or shaft drive uses less energy, therefore improving range, and the question if using hybrid IEP might be possible.
The main benefit of IEP is certainly NOT quietness, otherwise the QE wouldn't have IEP. The main benefit is power efficiency. In a conventional engine configuration, even one that involves generators like CODLAG or CODLOG, the GTs and diesels are divided into either propulsion or power generation, but the prime movers (usually the largest GTs) are not plugged into the electrical grid, and therefore can only serve to drive the ship. If not driving the ship, they are idle and are wasting space. The diesel/gas generators OTOH can either drive the ship or power the electrical system (or both). However, in an IEP ship every GT and every diesel is both a propulsion unit and a power generation unit. There are significant energy savings to be gained from this, especially at less than maximal power loads. And if you can accept a slight speed drop while charging the flywheels for an EM cat, you could even design a system that doesn't fully meet simultaneous maximum speed and maximum power needs but makes some sacrifices in exchange for a less expensive or less fuel-hungry design.

Excellent explanation. Thanks

Not within 12 nautical miles but into contiguous zone (24 miles zone) around Taisho Island. They detected a submarine going underwater NW in the contiguous zone around Miyako Island using a P-3 and JS Onami earlier. It seems like Onami was tracking it all the time after that (enough to draw a precise course on the map). The other vessel was Type 054.

Yes, it's not the first time it happened. It was similar to the event from 2016.

Another Type 071 landing ship from the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navy came into the limelight on Wednesday with military experts saying such ships could enhance military advantages in dealing with potential island disputes.

With a maximum displacement of 29,000 tons, the 210-meter-long, 28-meter-wide Longhushanis the largest domestically designed amphibious warfare ship in China, news site thepaper.cn reported on Wednesday.

Longhushanwas named after a mountain in Yingtan, Jiangxi Province. The civil affairs bureau of the East China city released a notice on January 2 in an effort to collect a song for the new ship from the public.

The song needs to represent thoughts of enhancing the PLA and display the image of Longhushan, according to the notice.

"China is developing Type 071 ships to meet requirements of possible wars involved with islands in the future, which could help it gain advantages in solving disputes on islands as well as questions involved with Taiwan," Song Zhongping, a Chinese military expert, told the Global Times on Wednesday.

China owns four or five amphibious warfare ships, Song said.

Type 071 have helicopters that can land on islands from the sea.

The Type 071 can work with Type 075 amphibious assault ships and help the navy win control of the air during landing operations, according to Song.

"The Type 071 ships are equipped with defensive weaponry to deal with enemy attacks," said Song.

"It could also deliver the navy and the army to the target island. The expanding number of this type of ships could greatly enhance the PLA Navy's amphibious warfare capability," Song said.

Zhang Junshe, a senior research fellow at the PLA Naval Military Studies Research Institute, told the Global Times on Wednesday that aside from its use in landing operations, Type 071 ships have joined PLA Navy escort missions since the year of 2008.

"China has fewer landing ships than that of the US. And the PLA Navy is expanding the groups as it develops," Zhang said.

If the think the surface Force is going strong wait till you see the submarine programme

New submarine facility will be pumping out SSN/SSBN like no tomorrow

It’s just that we don’t see them

1-2 SSN every year and 1 x SSN every year

Huge nuclear submarine arsenal coming
