. Now it dominates the overall list, too, pushing the United States into second place.

For the first time, China has the most systems on the Top500 list, 202, up from 159 six months ago. The US dropped from 169 to 144. And in terms of the total performance of those machines, China also overtook the US, the

The news underscores the relentless ascent of China's supercomputing trajectory in recent years. It also marks a notable shift in the international balance of high-end computing power that's closely tied to industrial, academic and military abilities.

The top two machines both are in China. Sunway TaihuLight, at China's National Supercomputing Center in Wuxi, was clocked at 93.01 petaflops, or 93 quadrillion calculations per second. The No. 2 machine, Tianhe-2 at the National Supercomputer Center in Guangzho, scored 33.86 petaflops. They've held the top two spots for two years.

The United States might reclaim the top spot on the Top500 list, though. An IBM-built machine called Summit at Oak Ridge National Laboratory is designed to reach about 200 petaflops, double the performance of Sunway TaihuLight. It's in a 10,000-square-foot facility that's got a 20-megawatt power system for running the machine and keeping it cool. That's enough electricity to power about 16,300 houses.

For years, supercomputing speeds increased steadily with each new release of the Top500 list. In about 2012, though, progress improvements slowed down a notch, limited by diminishing processor speed improvements.

The Top500 organizers also have begun ranking supercomputers by a newer speed test designed to better reflect the range of computing tasks the machines handle, the

benchmark. By this measure, Fujitsu's K Computer at the RIKEN Advanced Institute for Computational Science in Japan is the top performer.

Good article but missing some points:

1. China's aggregate performance surpassed America's for the first time: 35.XX% to 29.XX%.
2. The top 5 (sustained speed) are Taihulight (93pf), Tianhe 2 (33pf), Piz Daint (19pf), Gyoukou (19pf), and Titan (17pf).
3. 5th is just about the worst position America has ever found itself in though it's unlikely to stay there.

That said, China having more supercomputers than the US, I expected, but by a margin of 202 vs 144 is just shocking (compared to a loss of 159 vs 169 just 6 months ago), even by Chinese standards of growth...

so it seems Tianhe 2A which will use purely Chinese chips not ready yet ?

Interesting that Japanese Gyoukou seems very efficient .. only 1.35 MW and reach 19.1 PFLOPS
American Titan is not that good in term of power efficiency

Yes, 2A substituted Intel Phi Coprocessor which was the original plan, but kept Xeon CPU. I think this is the end of 2 series. Anything next (Tianhe-3?) from NUDT will have to be full Chinese chip. I don't think US will allow Intel to sell better chip, nor does China dare to buy.

Indeed, Japan is impressive in being green. 4 of the top 5 are from Japan, all of them using ZettaScaler architecture. I am interested in what is special with it.

And Uncle Sam has the gall to complain about the trade deficit

I find out why the Japanese computers are so green. It is not about CPU or architecture. It is about full immersed liquid cooling. It is 20 times more efficient than air cooling, 7 times more efficient than another type of liquid cooling used by Taihulight and Tianhe.

But the latest Chinese cooling system will be better than what Japan has. A figure I don't fully understand, PUE. The lower it is the more efficient the cooling system is. The Chinese one is almost equal to 1, while Japanese system is much higher. The reason is that Chinese system choose to vaporize the liquid, Japan does not. We all know vaporization is much more efficient.

I expect to see a bump of greenness of Chinese super-computer soon.

Greenness is not just nice to environment, but a must to reach exa-scale, "heat-wall".

Here is the detail in Chinese.
