That suggests it is just another serial number system change. But why brigades instead of regiments? Is it but a name? Or does brigadization hold an operational purpose?

I second this question.

J-10 Rgts location

The 12th new AF Rgt to Mengzi, 5 in the south and 4 around Beijing very concentrated on these 2 areas + unique Navy in blue.

Former Nankin MR the main concentration would have rather heavy fighters bombers, Flankers family and JH-7.

Q-5 retirement

A pic appear some days ago but not sufficient for me not clear.
View attachment 37268

But now here ( i can' t provide translation ) confirmed the 7 Q-5 Rgts/Brigades with about 200 get retired soon main reason expensive to maintain and replaced by J-16 but not one by one coz more expensive.
One J-16 unit, Brigade or Rgt will have about 20 J-16 + 4 J-16D same number than J-11 units.

13th Attack Rgt to Weifang
In 2017 the Q5s from 13th Regiment (serials 1xx6x) operating from Weifang were withdrawn from use
Scramble
" withdrawn from use " can means temporarily don't have fightes bombers but the Rgt is not stand down/dissolved possible receive J-16s ?

Remains 5 Rgts about 140 birds i think

how did we get from 40 something j10 (both B,C and S) to 26? Why the large fluctuations? There was something like 38 different serials observed just for B variant within one year recently. Why would they increase the production for just one year before dropping it to smaller volumes again?

Plus there's H6K which i counted in my figures. Should be around 10 a year.

For J-10 production imposible to say maybe money for J-20 or for build ships ?? or eventualy transition production for D say Henri K ?

With China nobody can' t say... can be more money for J-20 even for ships or Henri K say eventualy... transition production for J-10 new variant ?

I have read a time and i think about 6 by year and we have 65 H-6Ks identified and entered service in 2009.

According to multiple experienced PLAAF ORBAT-watchers, the 78AXA-series of PLAAF units work like this:

  • 78AXA units do not follow the "78X - 611" scheme. That means there are no such things as the 170th-177th brigades. I think AMan's post about 788 - 722 is correct.
  • 78X1X, 78X2X, 78X3X are Cangzhou regimental-level units. Although they are regimental units, they fly so many aircraft that their total number is far larger than a normal division. Their mission is two-fold; combat and advanced training. The pilots that are assigned to them are the best of the PLAAF.
  • 78X6X is Dingxin's oldest unit. Their mission is testing and experimenting. They fly a large assortment of aircraft from J-7s to J-11Bs, to transport aircraft. They are responsible for evaluating weapon systems. The

trialling the PL-15 spotted a few years ago belonged to this unit.
  • 78X7X is a new unit formed in 2014. Their mission is evaluating new equipment and writing the manual for the rest of the PLAAF's pilots. The 90th PLA Anniversary parade's aircraft were mostly from this unit. New aircraft are sent to this unit for evaluation before further proliferation. Their mission used to be handled by Cangzhou's units.
  • 78X8X is a new unit formed in 2014. This is the PLAAF's new dedicated OPFOR unit. They replace Cangzhou's old OPFOR unit that was the size of a "dadui" (8 aircraft?). This unit is a brigade-level unit, far larger than the old OPFOR unit. Their designation is the "PLAAF 66th Brigade", not 177th Brigade. They supposedly fly

of aircraft. So far, aircraft no. 17, 21, 25, 26, and 32 have been spotted.
  • 78X9X is a UAV training unit, possibly also a combat unit. They were featured in a few CCTV-7 broadcasts. They are not the same unit as the one that was featured in the 2015 Parade.

Thanks a lot but I must admit, it does not convince me or at least I'm still sceptical

I agree that there is something strange on these units, but what about the regular front-line units like the 130. and 131. Brigades? They also have 74xXx - serials with a 4 instead of an 8.

So IMO it does not make any sense for the PLAAF to establish yet another serial-system only for the 78AXA units. Another argument against this allegedly 66th Brigade, it would be from the former 22nd Air Division, not a well-known former Attack Division, that merged with the 11th AD and in no way related for tests.
