When someone can enter someone's territorial waters ( with a coastline long few thousamd kilometers ) undetected that's not some special thing. But enter, do something important and run away, that's something completely else.

Also, I'm pretty sure that the Chinese submarines can also enter Australian territorial waters undetected.

If you actually read the book, an Australian submarine was almost discovered inside busy Shanghai harbour, because they were dragging a fishing boat under the water to its doom.

If that had happened, the Chinese government could have legitimately and publicly executed the crew for murder...

And Australia and PR China were at war at the time, back in 1992? Because only that justifies such stunts... Using Oberon to go into buissy port like Shangai ( even without fishing boats and nets ) during a peacetime? IMHO, the captain of said boad and his superior officer that issued the order should be court martialed by the AUSTRALIA on charges for stupidity and jeopardising the boat and lives of crew.

He was ordered to collect intelligence on new PLAN submarines. I don't see why they would need to do so, especially in such a risky way, back in 1992 considering PLAN submarines back then, both conventional and nuclear, were jokes. It's not until the mid-90s that the somewhat capable Type 039 began to enter service.

China has every right to kill anyone intruded upon its territory with malicious intentions, at war or not

I would love to hear that on this board after JMSDF got PLAN submarine within 12 miles of it's own territory.

End of discussion for you.

The PLAN never intruded in Japanese territorial waters. Diaoyu Islands are not Japanese sovereign territory.

The JMSDF has every right to kill every intruder in Japanese territorial waters. Likewise, the PLAN has every right to kill intruders in Chinese territorial waters.
