Bhutan: Dangerous liaison

Well if India is claiming a $20 billion soft loan from China to end the standoff and China is denying it, India is claiming they won that China needed to bribe them. The first thing that comes to mind is why would India accept a $20 billion dollar loan from their enemy, China? That's admitting China is better than India for them to need a loan from their enemy. Where's their nationalistic pride? Isn't this what Obama warned countries about getting loans from China?

No "winning" against Indians. They're the kind of people who will deny a loss even when it's hit them in the face. This kind of mentality is why they're as poor and undeveloped as they are 100 years ago. Only difference is advancements in technology (from elsewhere almost never from India) has given them the illusion of progress. Stop wasting time trying to persuade Indians. That effort, if to be expended, is better used on the rest of the world.

It's China move first to build road ("disputed" territory or not). In that perspective, China did not get what it wanted, for now. Like many people indicated, it may come back, or it may not.
At India's perspective, it did "halt" China's initiative, for now. So, yes, you can call India got what it wanted -- I tend to agree that world will look at this way.
While yelling around is not so wise, the real fool is the one who think game had finished, when just one small pawn is down. We need to see who laugh at last.

Well it was not written in the agreement or statement Just India media interpretation The question of road building was raised in parliament but there is no confirmation from the GOI
The western press tend to side with India anyway so you can interpret if it half empty of half full
I believe it is temporary lull in the dispute because of BRIC, Korea, National congress It is distraction for China.Depending on what is the intent of the road It can be resumed next year .With winter is coming, If there is fight over Doklam,it will be halted anyway. China is ambiguous about the road

Is there assurance that China will not try building road again in Doklam, asks Congress
China on Tuesday remained ambiguous on whether it has stopped its road building in Doklam, which triggered the over 70-day standoff between border troops of India and China that ended on Monday.

As the BJP rejoiced the end of the Doklam standoff and hailed the Narendra Modi government’s diplomacy, a cautious Congress posed several questions for the ruling establishment.

The principal opposition party has sought to know if there was any explicit or implicit assurance that the Chinese side will not resume the construction of roads in that area — the flashpoint of confrontation between the two neighbours.

“The statements of both India and China don’t say anything on this. We wish to know if there is any assurance,” asked party leader Manish Tewari.

Tewari also pointed out that the Indian statement speaks about “expeditious disengagement” and said from the two statements, it did not look like it will be mutual.

“If we are giving them any face-saver, the Chinese side at least hasn’t given us any. They have indicated they will do verification,” he said.

Another Congress leader, former diplomat Shashi Tharoor, also wondered if there was any undertaking that Beijing will not try to rebuild the road.

Tewari underlined that as the situation was volatile in the Korean peninsula, China probably did not want to escalate tension on another front.

“This, in other words, would mean that China will pick and choose the areas where they want to engage. Chances remain that in future, they may again resume building roads.”

“It would be premature to declare it as a diplomatic success and it is not clear who blinked first — China or India,” Tewari added.

The goal post shifting on the Indian side is truly entertaining.

First it was "we will never back down before the Chinese!!!!", "not one step back!!!!".

Now it's "well maybe they won't continue building that raid".

When Chinese does restart building work on the road, I'm sure the goal post will magically change again to "we delayed the Chinese road building!"

Here the statement of MOD spokesperson
What did he mean when he said
Efforts to communicate with the Indian military had played an important role in ending the 70-day face-off, he said.

China’s defence ministry said on Thursday it made multiple attempts to negotiate with India during their protracted stand-off in the Himalayas through military and border defence channels.

Ministry spokesman Ren Guoqiang also told reporters in Beijing that China would boost patrols in the disputed region and would continue to make road building plans “taking into consideration various factors”.

The two countries on Monday ended a face-off on the remote Doklam plateau that began in mid-June when China began building a road in the disputed area close to Bhutan.

“Not in a single moment have we forgotten our responsibility of safeguarding the motherland and upholding peace,” Ren said. “Not in a single moment have we relented in our targeted preparation for military struggle.”

Ren said that during the stand-off, the Chinese military had put emergency response measures into action, stepped up border patrols and made deployments to ensure combat readiness.

Efforts to communicate with the Indian military had played an important role in ending the 70-day face-off, he said.

“The Chinese side will continue to strengthen patrols in the Donglang area,” Ren said, using the Chinese name for Doklam. “In the future, we will continue to make plans for infrastructure construction, taking into consideration various factors including the weather conditions.”

Ren also defended China’s roadworks, saying they were needed to “better guard our border and improve the living and working conditions of the military and civilians in the area”.

Details are sketchy as to how the worst border dispute between the two countries in more than three decades came to an end.

India’s foreign ministry on Monday announced an “expeditious disengagement” of troops from Doklam after agreement was reached between the two sides.

China’s foreign ministry meanwhile said it was pleased that “trespassing Indian personnel have all pulled back to the Indian side of the boundary” but would not confirm whether China had stopped the roadworks.

Instead, its spokeswoman Hua Chunying said: “We will consider various factors such as weather conditions when formulating infrastructure plans.”

Pardon me truncating quote. Allow me to say you had repeated what I said. China may come back, or may not. Too early to say it's over.
-- I like what Bltizo and KIENCHIN said. I will not be surprised that, perhaps at first day of coming spring, the whole world wake up to learn that China had finished the road... ...

both sides who are parties to the dispute over the doklam territory patrolled the area to register their claims but refrained from building permanent infrastructure since that would change facts on the ground. india said clearly that it wanted a return back to the status quo. the road building has stopped. the troops encamped facing each other have withdrawn. india won. end of story. remember that patrolling was pre status quo norm. so unless bhutan says that after this incident they will stop their patrolling - then they've just gone back to square one. or rather, india has pushed them back to square one.
