Any more detail on this electromagnetic-launched system? What is the concept? Like a railgun, but with missiles in it? When the missile is launched it will turn on the engine and fly on its own?

From what I understand, it is an advanced VLS that utilizes electromagnets to propel the projectile out of the cell and does so with a very high velocity as to allow smaller projectiles to have the same range as larger (conventionally-launched) projectiles that have rocket boosters.

actually it's remarkably vague. it may not be anything like a VLS. over on cdf it was speculated that it might be something like an EM gun turret of some kind instead with underdeck reloads/"missiles".

Because the way Ma describes his concept ship seems to suggest the EM launcher (i.e.: an effective railgun or coilgun of some kind) is meant to orient the "missile" towards the target, to reduce the "missile's" need for propellant. If it's a VLS EM launcher, not only will each VLS cell itself need to essentially be an EM launcher (again, like a railgun or coilgun), but it also means each "missile" launched from a EM VLS will result in the missile merely being launched vertically upwards and still need substantial propellant to fly towards the target, but not vertically+horizontally towards the target.

But as I said, it's remarkably vague.

To me, this concept sounds like a launcher in a big turret - with the ranges stated the missiles will be huge (compared to shells) and the launcher might be even bigger than a 16'' gun.

So if there's going to be rumours about a >30.000 ton PLAN battleship with 2 huge turrets containing missile launchers and some smaller turrets with railguns we might not be able to dismiss them out of hand.

This is beginning to sound more and more the return of the all gun pocket battleship

Jesus Christ, this start to get into Scifi territory, and yeah I agree if every single launcher has electromagnetic propulsion inside that would not be realistic, so it might be more like traditional turrets but that would defeat the whole purpose of VLS because the rate of fire would be slow as hell, the extra 200km would not be a trade off.

Unless the found a way to launch missiles with electromagnetic rail turrets, with very high reload speed for the missiles inside?
