It appears that the observation platform on the island aft is larger than Liaoning. Is there a name for that structure?
I think that's the primary flight control. Whereas US carriers stack their flag and ship bridges together with the pri-fly, the Russian and Chinese carriers have the bridges facing forward and the pri-fly facing the rear.
Externally, the differences between these two ships are minor, and smaller than the differences often found between sister ships of the same class in many other navies, for example between different ships of the Nimitz class. So based on external layout alone, it is reasonable to assign both of these ships to the same class.

I was just thinking the same thing, they are nearly mirror images externally,,, but I would imagine the Shandong will be much cleaner below decks. With the Chinese having all that experience operating the Liaoning, they've likely cleared much of the clutter from below decks in order to streamline aircraft handling and utility in general.
This will be a more celebratory commission and induction, with this ship possibly moving into the Flag Ship role!
