I certainly believe that part of the USN's plan to extend carrier availability worldwide over the next few decades is to rely on allied navies to help fill gaps. Not that there are many, but recent years have seen overwork and reduced maintenance schedules lead to problems that will be resolved eventually but may well reoccur given similar circumstances. The announced deployment of USMC F-35Bs aboard the QECs along with other rotary wing types alongside the UK aircraft aboard will lead to a capability superior to an America class LHA but inferior to a CVN. Still enough to make an impact on the world stage if a CSG is unavailable.

In the next decade there may well also be moves behind the scenes to persuade other allies to facilitate similar arrangements, for example the US could help pay for necessary upgrades to the RANs Canberra class LHDs in order for them to operate a sqn of USMC F-35Bs on joint ops, even if the Aussies themselves ultimately can't find the cash to do the work and buy the 'B's for themselves. Spain, Italy and eventually Turkey could also fall into this category too...

Such ships whilst certainly not being a match in terms of capability for a USN CVN, definitely would have a lot of political value and these kind of operations buy a lot of capital for their Governments. That alone may make it a worthwhile venture. It's certainly the case for the UK Government with the QECs.View attachment 36997
Teh arrangement could workl with the Japanese too...although it is much more likely, IMHO, that the Japanese, if they see the need, will buy the aircraft themselves.

Excellent post Obi Wan.. you are indeed wise as Yoda has foretold.

The public in the US in particular has no idea of the needs, size, power and ablity of the USN. Especially if they pay attention to the wrong liberal news source.

This photo of the very large hangar is censored..I don't know why..curious.
I pedicted that the JMSDF would join the USN in FON exercises in the SCS...and here it goes.

I did not think they would send one of the Izumos...they are making a big statement by sending that vessel and its escorts there,

Problem with F-35B, AV-8B don' t have special thermal coating a bit expensive but in Asia Pacific area make sense Izumos and Canberras are later equiped with F-35B
Izumo is much more versatile than Hyuga, carry enough fuel for refuel about 2 combattants and 500 troops, Hyuga about 100 can be a true LHD in addition capable do minesweeping duty 2 MCH-101, Hyuga 1, Uraga MS/ML also 1.

Ships armed with LR SAM especialy AEGIS can provide a vey good defense and if their range is at least equal with the range of AShM on a Aircraft can't destroy him eventualy before he fired but CAP are in general more efficient than SAM for power and range despite it a flight of F-35B can't match a big Sqn or Rgt.

I saw this article in China's Xinhua online news. Check out this mistake. They must be using info from over 25 years ago..

The Nimitz-class aircraft carrier and its attendant fleet are accompanied by 24 F/A-18 fighter jets, 10 aerial tankers, 10 S-3A anti-submarine airplanes, six SH-3H anti-submarine helicopters, four EA-6B electronic warfare aircraft and four E-2 airborne early warning aircraft.

If you read the whole article it never names the carrier which is USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70).

Well , well well..this is a link to a great slide show of USS Carl Vinson in port in Busan ROK. The text of the pictures is an inflammatory (IMO) op-ed piece accusing the US of planning an attack on the DPRK....also referring to the ROK as a US puppet.

The Thermal coating issue is held up often but really isn't a big deal. The ship's decks could be recovered in under a month if needed, during a scheduled refit if need be. At the moment the Japanese are playing the 'Fleet in Being' game with the Chinese. Effectively they are building up a small but very modern fleet of carriers which could be quickly upgraded to operate F-35Bs if required. They are buying F-35As for their 'Air Force' (JASDF) and simulators too, which I guarantee you are capable of providing realistic basic training on the 'B' model too. At present the Japanese can maintain a 'self defence' posture as they are only getting As and the carriers are helicopter only. It takes a lot less time to buy 'Bs and upgrade the carriers than it does to build from scratch, so it 's a contingency plan at the moment, one aimed squarely at their Chinese neighbours...

Beyond that the JMSDF has some of the best AAW ships in he world. Adding F-35B to the mix would be a small step at this point, one I believe they have planned well for. They are just holding back on pulling the trigger until it's politically expedient to do so, and can comfortably sit on the moral high ground in the meantime. If the JMSDF comes up with an equivalent project to the RN's Crowsnest in the next few years. that will be a clear pointer as to which direction they are headed...

BUSAN, Republic of Korea (NNS) -- Aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70), embarked Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 2 and Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Wayne E. Meyer (DDG 108) arrived in Busan, Republic of Korea (ROK) for a scheduled port visit, March 15.

The Carl Vinson Strike Group completed two weeks of routine operations in the South China Sea and will continue on their regularly scheduled Western Pacific deployment after departing Busan.

Assets from the USS Carl Vinson Carrier Strike Group and other United States forces will conduct bi-lateral exercises with forces from the ROK Navy in the waters around the Korean peninsula during the annual Foal Eagle exercise.

"The training opportunities we have in this region are world-class and allow us to build upon our strong alliance with the Republic of Korea," said Rear Adm. James Kilby, commander, Carrier Strike Group 1. "For more than 60 years, the United States and Republic of Korea have operated side-by-side as partners and I couldn't be more excited to further this relationship."
