US Navy DDG 1000 Zumwalt Class

here's all sorts of people second guesing the Navy's new ships and aircraft.

But a one who has worked in the design of these types of vessels and ehnologies and one who has friend still on the front lines of those designs. I will say this.

The Zumwalts will gt the Rail Gun and lasers. They were designed with that in mind...irrespective of the AGS. The Rail Giun they ultimately get is what they were aiming for and they will revolutionize war at sea...as will the lasers.

The F-35C will revolutionize air combat and capability at sea.

The ford class will take a while to reachits future...there is simply so much new and good about the design that it will take time to learn how to best apply it, write that up, test it, and then test it again and again, improving as she goes. But she will be the ultimate nuclear aircraft carrier class.

The LCS had problems from the get go...and mainly because you had a bunch of Freshman naval appointees trying to make something sexy out of what shuld have been a frigate. Well, they have learned a lot and are finally gong to get the thigns uoarmed and changed to be what they should have been all along.

Once that occurs, they will end up being good, strong, fast frigates.

I still recommend both for ASW work with amphibious and aircrat carrier strike groups, and having the INdependence class be the one that takes on cles work with the amphinious groups including anti-min capability, while the Freedom class is more of the all around frigate including AAW, ASW, and ASuW.

If they arem them properly, they can both erform admirably in those roles, and I think they are going to be able to do it now.

None of that...and for some people NOTHING, will ever change the disdain certain politicians and groups have for the US Navy. It's been that way my whole life.

But we have seen them come and we have seen them go.

Before all is said and done, the ZUmwalt will break unbelievable gorund for some amazing technologues. I wish we were building a doen of them...but what we learn from the three will be put to good use on a future design if they do not build more.

The Ford will be the ultimate carrier class with all of its new caabilities. The F-35C is going to be a HECK of a at sea stealthy strike aircraft that can handle air to air whenever it needs to. And the LCS will grow into its own now that they have oulled their heads out of their osterior and started moving them towards what they should have been from the beginnning.

I agree with everything you've said, but the Navy had lots or PR Capital, and got money for LCS, Zummies, Ford's, the F-35Cs, which will no doubt do what they were created to do, and I'm sure the Ford class will eventually get there?? but we've got to honestly admit and I think that from your above post you would agree, that the Navy and the high-up "muckety-mucks", will have to "own" some of this???

REad my post just before yours my friend.

The Zumwalt was always targeted at the Rail Gun and the Laser.
The AGS was supposed to be the ultimate gun owder weapon...and they could have made it that wy if they had not had so much mission creep and so much political nonsense associated with getting them aboard the ship as a stop gap-precursor to the Rail Guns.

But the Rail Guns are going to be ready and I believe the LBJ will leave the builder's dock with one on it.

We shall see.

I believe you, the only thing that scares me about about that are the initials??? LBJ??? being from Tejas, you know what I mean

We have lived for the last eight years with an administration that should own it. They have done all they could to slow down, water down, and muddy up these programs precisely because they would make America strong.

Sad to say, we have had leaders who believe that the US is the problem itself and that it should not have such advantages. They have, as I have said, sought to derai, defund, and screw around with these programs. They have appointed absolute lackeys into all levels of decision making at the civilian departments, and sadly, within the armed forces themselves...after firing, forcing into retirement, or otherwise neutering the strong militayry leadership that otherwise would have been available to them.

but they could not completely stop or neuter it and we now have an administration who is seeking to right these worngs. but it is going to take time...and it is going to cost to get things back on the rails.

I am all for the people who have scred up getting a meat loaf of come-uppanc and responsibility...but the political machine within the DNC, and the establishment GOP too, will do all in their power to keep that from happening.

I do believe however that Mr. Trump will find a way. He's going to turn the economy around, get American corporations firing on all eight with his economic and tax plans, and he will have the financing to do what he need to do and without bloating the debt...in fact I bet he reduces the debbt substantially before all is said and done because there is a monster economy out there waiting to take off on rocket engines.

I hope I live long nough o see it my friend. I am hopeful now that it can happen. Hillary would have been a diaster and would have continued those programs and doubled down on them.

I view it as a miracle with God in Heaven's help that we avoided that disaster.

Oh yes. He and McNamara were about as bad as the Carter and bama...but IMHO, nobody tops Obama in my lifet time.

But the ship will be a good vessel, and it will perfrom, despite its name. He was a President, and he did serve in the US Navy Reserve during World War II. Hewas awarded a silver star for his action when his recon/observation aircraft came under attack.

... projects that end up being "semi-functional"??
I add here one thing and right after leave it for some time:

I noticed the USN was covering quite dangerous delays, cost overruns, and missing capabilities in various ways (struggling to avoid Nunn–McCurdy review); perhaps the simplest trick is to LATER declare Phase 1, Phase 2, ... of obviously the same program :) for example the Zumwalt has been COMMISSIONED UNARMED with the USN, and the Ford will probably follow this path, so:

"The committee is concerned the variance in the Navy's
definition of ship delivery may obscure oversight of the
program's schedule, including whether or not a project has
breached its threshold delivery date. The committee is also
concerned Navy ships are being delivered in various degrees of
completion and then, after a period of availabilities and
shakedowns, possibly several years later, the ship is delivered
to the fleet for operations. CVN-79 and the Zumwalt-class
programs illustrate this practice.
Therefore, the committee also directs the Comptroller
General of the United States to submit a report, not later than
March 1, 2017, that includes analysis and recommendations
regarding the Navy's process for fully delivering ships from
the time the Navy takes custody of the vessel until the vessels
are fully complete and ready for operations. This review should
examine the Navy's cost and schedule milestones throughout this
process and how these milestones are reported to decision
makers and oversight agencies. The review should also propose a
common definition and criteria for Navy ship deliveries,
including the associated dates."

only now I noticed (dated February 15, 2017 11:43 AM) USS Zumwalt to Conduct Brief Sea Trial This Week to Light Off Radar, Test Recent Fixes
First-in-class destroyer USS Zumwalt (DDG-1000) will head to sea this week to begin testing components of its combat system, in its first sea trial event since

.

Vice Adm. Tom Moore, commander of Naval Sea Systems Command, told USNI News this morning that the at-sea event is “not a full-fledged combat system” lightoff event, but rather “it’ll be the first opportunity to light the [SPY-3 Multi-Function Radar] off, and it’ll be the first opportunity to light off several of the other combat system elements on the ship.”

Moore said the ship would operate for a few days, engineers would collect some data, and then the ship would return to shore for its scheduled six-month post-shakedown availability. A full at-sea trial will take place after the PSA to test the entire combat system.

This week’s at-sea trial will also be the first opportunity to test

for a lube oil coolers failure that sidelined Zumwalt at least twice during its transit from Bath Iron Works in Maine to San Diego in the fall.

Moore said going to sea would allow the Navy to “test out some of the things we fixed in the propulsion plant that we had the challenges when we transited (to San Diego), and then it’s the first opportunity really to turn on some of these systems and go radiate things for the first time and go collect some data, work with Raytheon and make sure that the system is working like it’s supposed to.”

, Moore said engineers had tested the fix pier-side, “but until you can go run the ship up to full power, you never – it’s like when you sit in your car in the driveway, you can turn the car on, it’s running, but until you can take it out on the highway and run it around. So we’ve made some fixes and we think we’ve fixed the design issues there. We haven’t come through everything, but we want to go out and we’ll run her around for a couple days at sea.”

A good idea but a bit late !

Italy-based Leonardo has been invited by the US Navy (USN) to verify and test its Vulcano guided ammunition for potential application to the DDG 1000 MK 51 155 mm calibre Advanced Gun System (AGS), according to Gianpiero Lorandi, managing director of Leonardo's Defence Systems division.

With the support of the Leonardo subsidiary DRS Technologies, based in the United States, Leonardo is expected to "conduct a two-phased fire trials campaign" after verification and testing, Lorandi told Jane's at IDEX 2017 held in Abu Dhabi.
