Did the Xinhua article explain what "self-developed" means? Did the project team designed it from scratch, or did it modify a foreign turboshaft and called it self-developed?
Think of cooking. You enjoy a dish from a Chinese restaurant so much that you decide to make it at home. You only have a vague idea of the ingredients, so it took you few years of trial-and-errors until you finally got the dish to look and taste exactly the same.

Is it a copy? Yes. Is it self-developed? Yes. The two terms are not mutually exclusive.

Unlike cooking if you have the actual engine that you can just pull it a part and just replicate imitation parts that's COPYING no matter how you spin it.

Just like cooking, you can have all the ingredients listed but no idea what order to put them together. With technologies, the hard part is figuring out the right proportion and steps to put the raw materials together to make the components. Figuring all that out is self-development no matter how you spin it.

My understanding about making high tech items like jet engines and radars is that materials engineering is just as much if not more important than design. To continue the cooking analogy, knowing that the key ingredient of a dish is soy sauce is not helpful when you don't know how to make soy sauce or have reliable access to it.

That is how you make cheap imitations in which doesn't really match the real thing.

Exactly. You actually brought up a very good example: Soy-sauce represents first-stage turbine blade while the entire dish represents a jet engine. Good luck making your own soy-sauce.

The tendency of someone belittling something as "just a copy" is inversely proportional to the amount of knowledge he/she has.

My 泥烘 friend, I gave you all the BMW parts and sheet metals and materials, you can not put them together as a BMW.

If you were an expert of cars, you might be able to put them together as a good Honda or Toyota.
