Interesting comparison of the deck (via CDF)

Which leads me to this:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With the smaller island, and with the extra room aft, they have definitely bought themselves more room to spot aircraft and to maneuver them during flight operations. I bet the hanger is longer too now and can accommodate more aircraft below. In addition, there is no doubt that they would have analyzed and improved internal spaces wherever they could.

I don't think so ... They had the original ship but not the blueprints.

But don't China have a full set of blueprints for the Ulyanovsk follow-on carrier as well?
Well, as I said in an earlier post...

Make no mistake, this IS a Chinese carrier. They have taken all that they learned from refitting the Varyag into the Liaoning...which they did themselves...then they created all of the specifications and requirements for their own carrier based on it, made all of their own drawings, and now have built it from scratch, from the keel up themselves.

Quite an achievement.

Heck...I am not even Chinese and I am excited about seeing it happen. One need not agree with all they do, or their government form, to have respect for their achievements.

One day within the next couple of years, this new carrier will be out doing trials and the Liaoning will pull up next to her and you will see two large Chinese carriers exercising together.

To the PLAN officials (I hope that someone's watching this forum at least): instead of copying outdated designs, pleas watch this video! Or else we're gonna go through a painful period of repetition... at least use fresh ideas...

The Chinese are doing what they can accomplish and what they can afford to get themselves injected into the Carrier world. They had to start somewhere, and they determined to be as safe about it as they could, while developing the capabilities, knowledgebase, etc. themselves.

They did not ask or let the Russians redesign the carrier for them...they did it themselves.

They did not purchase their carrier aircraft from the Russians...they took what they had and designed their own.

This second carrir is now one which the Chinese have taken what they have learned, and produced a second carrier like the first...which tells me that was their plan all along, so they can maximize the training and logistics.

From all of this knowledge, they will move forward now IMHO and design something bigger and better, that will probably be CATOBAR and distinctly Chinese.

we shall see...time will tell.

Jeff, do you know how much it takes to introduce anything new in the PLAN? New ideas, designs, moving things forward to the edge? Those things in the video were done more than 15 years ago. If there's someone who could push changes through in the command is a mystery. They're doing something but nothing fresh. If there's time to push new ideas is right now - when they're growing. Not when stagnation and replacement will come from this wave of 'new toys' some 30 years forward.

My only problem with PLAN is - when you have all those money why are you making loads of rudimentary 056 class ships which will be able to push Brunei Navy back home instead of pushing new ideas which will give you an edge for the future? Not that have anything about them but all they could in case of war would be going from one naval base on the coast to another waiting for what? Because bigger boys with more powerful radars won't have to go against them with some serious money wasted on keeping them alive. Is the problem within PLAN's nowadays officials? They don't have any visionaries in the top echelons? The tech difference is somewhat 20 years backwards like many users here wouldn't like to see? Or they're waiting for the end of the world? Because Wunderwaffe theorem is outdated - Japanese and Germans already showed that.

I am not completely sure the 2nd is to 100 % Chinese...

For 056 no rudimentary an honnest Corvette even in a French Mag they say for her missions can do good job ofc is not a battleship.
And to use in Flotillas.

Compared to what they have been working with for coastal defense, like the Type 37, the Type 056 does represent a huge step forward. They still have a massively long and complicated shoreline to defend. The Type 056 is a GREAT tool to do that with....and they need a lot of them.

Not that have anything about them but all they could in case of war would be going from one naval base on the coast to another waiting for what? Because bigger boys with more powerful radars won't have to go against them with some serious money wasted on keeping them alive.
We see things like the new destroyers...and the Type 052D is a world class destroyer with very strong weapons and sensors. The Type 055 is going to even be more so.

The Chinese have to put something out there to reach near parity while they are researching the higher tech, break through technologies.

And make no mistake...they are researching them. Rail guns, Lasers, Hypervelocity delivery craft, all of those things. The US may be on the verge of actually introducing some of those things...but I do not believe the Chinese are that terribly far behind.

15-20 years ago they were 30 years behind the US. Now, they are within a few years of introducing technologies and craft that are very near parity. Someone with a lot of expertise, planning capabilities...and smarts, has been involved in engineering this for the Chinese over the last 15-20 yeas. It is relatively phenomenal what they have accomplished.

They don't have any visionaries in the top echelons? The tech difference is somewhat 20 years backwards like many users here wouldn't like to see? Or they're waiting for the end of the world? Because Wunderwaffe theorem is outdated - Japanese and Germans already showed that.
I think they do have visionaries in the right places...otherwise they could not have achieved the progress they have made in the last 15 years. I do not believe they are 20 years behind. I believe it is less than 10...but that is coming fromm a time period when they were more than 30.

It is not easy to make up such a gap...but they are methodically doing so.

...and I believe the higher tech you are waiting for is being researched and weaponized as we speak. The US may still get it out to sea first...but I think a lot of people are going to be surprised how soon after that the Chinese begin testing the same types of things.
