I love the Skyraider! It did a bang-up in 'Nam. Modernize it with glass cockpit and up to date avionics, and it and it'll outdo the Super Tucano.
The engine is about twice as powerful and I don't see that engine modernized. What about a very thoroughly modernized A2D?
One proposal for the war against Vietnam was equipping old P-51D's with 3000 shp RR Dart engines.
I would look for high powered single engine turboprop aircraft to a modern contra-prop say similar to those of the An-70. Remember the torque effects of a single propeller.

Hey ... it seems he still hasn't spotted "our" psed 2102 :p:D but that does not prevent him to do another piece of "high quality report":

In summary, nothing that we not know since some time ... but the way he tells it ...

China's Aircraft Carriers: The Ultimate Paper Tiger?
(THE NATIONAL INTEREST 06 MAR 16) ... Dave Majumdar

The Chinese People’s Liberation Army Navy’s (PLAN) aircraft carriers won’t be able to conduct blue water operations in the way the U.S. Navy’s flattops do. Nor will the PLAN have global power projection capabilities akin to those afforded by America’s fleet of supercarriers. That’s the assessment of the Pentagon’s Defense Intelligence Agency.

“The aircraft carriers that they’re building will not have the same blue open ocean capability that our aircraft carriers have,” U.S. Marine Corps. Lt. Gen. Vincent Stewart, director of the Defense Intelligence Agency, told the House Armed Service Committee on March 2. “Nor will it be able to execute air operations the way we use our carriers.”

Chinese aircraft carriers – at least initially – will be focused on local operations in the seas surrounding China, Stewart said. Most of China’s efforts seem aimed at securing Beijing’s claims in the South China Sea and its so-called nine-dash line.

Indeed, China’s current aircraft carrier, the 55,000-ton Liaoning – which was originally built in Ukraine before the collapse of the Soviet Union – is about half the size of an American Nimitz-class vessel. Moreover, the Chinese carrier is equipped with a ski-jump rather than catapults – limiting its ability launch heavier aircraft.

China’s follow-on aircraft carrier – which is under construction at the Dalian shipyards – is also based on the Russian Project 1143.5 Orel design like Liaoning and Kuznetsov. That means, until China develops an indigenous aircraft carrier with either steam or electromagnetic catapults, the PLAN will not have a flattop comparable to a Nimitz or Ford-class carrier.

However, as Beijing develops better technology and secures bases overseas, the PLAN’s global reach will expand. Indeed, there are indications that the Chinese intend to do just that. “Some of the excursions now with port facilities in Africa and their submarine technology suggest a much broader global capability in the offing,” Stewart said.

Only time will tell how the PLAN evolves over time. But even as China’s economic growth slows, Beijing continues to expand its military capabilities – albeit at a somewhat reduced rate.

fzgfzy, a big shrimp on Chinese BBS has made another vague post that everyone is assuming to be about carrier 002.

1. Some competing 'schemes' will probably lead to delays.

2. Propulsion unchanged, compared to the legendary/rumoured 大和多 (will explain below). Solved some problem with 'houdu'.

He personally thinks that both propulsion and catapults will be steam. Posits there to be two catapults but have heard 'other people' claim 3 and 4.

Vast majority think that the competing schemes mentioned in Pt. 1 are steam catapults vs EMALS. Some think it's about nuclear vs steam propulsion. One person said it might be competition between steam and nuclear propulsion. Another guy jokingly suggested that it is a competition between J-20 and J-31 carrier versions.

Most assume the 'propulsion unchanged' means 002 is keeping with steam propulsion as opposed to keeping the power output unchanged. The second part of the sentence has stirred a long-winded debate on what the three characters mean. The three interpretations I've seen are:

1. "Compared to the legendary (大和), greater amount." 大和 is Chinese for Yamato. It's written the same in Japanese since they copied the language anyway. This interpretation itself has sub-interpretations:
  • The displacement of the 002 is going to be greater than the Yamato's 70,000 tonnes. OR
  • The power output of 002's propulsion is greater than Yamato's, although this sub-interpretation has been discredited since there is no way China today will have difficulties surpassing 1930s propulsion technology.

2. 大和多 in pinyin is "da he duo". 大很多 in pinyin is "da hen duo" and means 'much larger'. Some have suggested that fzgfzy missed an 'n' in his typing and originally meant that the 002 or her propulsion system will be much larger than rumoured.

3. "Compared to the rumoured, (大) 和 (多)." This interpretation suggests that fzgfzy meant for the 大(big) and 多(numerous) not to be together but to be separated by the conjunction 和(and). The English translation for this interpretation is "compared to the rumoured specs, they is larger and more numerous". This interpretation, I think, makes the most sense and would mean that the propulsion systems (boilers?) will be larger and more numerous than rumoured.

No one has definitively decoded what he means by 'houdu' being fixed. Houdu is 厚度's pinyin, which means thickness. People are theorising he means either the thickness of the sheet metal used in construction has been changed or the thickness of the boilers' walls have been optimised.

This is a terrfic photo. Thanks for posting. Gents look at this photo in hi-res and see how many shipmates you see doing various task on the flight-deck. It looks some what busy. Much more busy than nay Russian flight deck photo I've ever seen. Yep. Nice job PLAN. Very nice indeed.

True indeed ... their flight deck activities seem to be ramping up ( only to be expected) and the requisite aircraft handling, fuelling and arming procedures/skills are coming on well.
