For Kirov modernisation now :
When both will be in service surely one based in the Pacific.

Modernisation of the nuclear missile cruiser Peter the Great (1144 Project) should start in 2019 at Sevmash (Severodvinsk). It is especially intended to equip the ship vertical launch tubes (3S-14 UKSK, Russian VLS) can implement Kalibr missile, Oniks missiles and hypersonic missiles Zircon (anti-surface range of 400 km). The ship should be delivered to the Navy in 2022. Comment: Sevmash carries since June 2013 in the modernization of the other cruiser of Project 1144, Admiral Nakhimov, whose delivery to the Navy is scheduled for 2018. The hypersonic missile 3M22 zircon is expected to reach Mach 5.0, and should replace the P-700 Granit.

The Russian Navy is set to upgrade its nuclear-powered Project 11442 Kirov-class battlecruiser Pyotr Veliky with a new hypersonic anti-ship cruise missile. The new Mach 5.0-capable 3M22 Zircon missiles would replace the ship’s existing 390-mile range P-700 Granit supersonic anti-ship missiles.

“The Pyotr Veliky will start repairs in the third or fourth quarter of 2019. Repairs and upgrade are due for completion in late 2022, the ship to be equipped with Zircon hypersonic anti-ship missiles,” a Russian

. “The missile is undergoing development testing and will enter service if it passes,” he added.

There is very little information available about the performance of the Zircon missile. However, the weapon has a range of at least 250 miles and will likely be capable of speeds greater than Mach 5.0. Given its sheer speed, the Zircon will be extremely difficult to intercept with current missile defense technology.

Both Pyotr Velikyi and its sister ship Admiral Nakhimov—which is currently being refurbished—are being upgraded with the new hypersonic weapon. Admiral Nakhimov, which will reenter operational service in 2018, will be the first of the Russian goliaths to be equipped with the Zircon.

When

reenter service, their current missile launch systems will be replaced with ten 3S-14 vertical launch systems—each of which carries eight rounds. Indeed, Sevmash—the shipyard refurbishing Admiral Nakhimov—signed a contract earlier last year with Almaz-Antey to provide those systems. The addition of the 3S-14 would enable each ship to carry eighty cruise missiles onboard.

While the Zircon would give the two Kirov-class battlecruisers greatly improved firepower against surface ships, the warships are also being provisioned with long-range Kalibr cruise missiles. Those weapons, which were recently used against Moscow’s enemies in Syria would afford the giant warships a very potent land-attack and long-range anti-surface warfare capability.

Meanwhile, both ships will also receive an upgraded air defense capability with the addition of a naval variant of the

and the mid-range Poliment-Redut missile systems. Earlier reports had suggested that the warships might receive the developmental

The tonnage of China's surface navy (712 100 t for 90 vessels) exceeded that of the Russian surface fleet (632 700 t to 157 units). However, if one includes the submersible, Russia is ahead of China (778,800 t against 754,700 t). Comment: reasoning in terms of tonnage is interesting but incomplete. Account must be taken of the buildings insdisponibilité rate, the number of buildings, their armament, training and morale of the crew .. However, it is indicative of a trend.

Corvette missile launcher Zelenyi Dol (21631 Project, Black Sea fleet) arrived in Tartous. This Corvette is equipped with Kalibr missiles. Russian navy seems to have at least one of these corvettes permanently deployed in the eastern Mediterranean, also Zeleny Dol will be relayed by the Serpukhov corvette (Project 21631 also) in late March. Comment: the missile corvettes of Project 21631 is not ocean-going vessels, these vessels should also spend most of their time in Syrian brown water, or docked in Tartous. The Mediterranean naval detachment of Russia is currently composed of the missile cruiser Varyag (1164 Project, Pacific Fleet), the great battle ship ASM Vice Admiral Kulakov (1155 Project, Northern Fleet) and the corvette Zeleny Dol.

... FORBIN I'll react to this part since you're my SDF Friend:
  1. it's not entirely true what you said: you can check the components of that system at:

  2. I put that system in quotes, and specified the missile:
... the AA defense based on the "Fort" with the "Redut" (100+ km range of 9М96Е2 missiles), too?
so I hoped nobody would nitpick; clearly, I was wrong

Have the Russians successfully tested a scramjet engine yet?

We (the U.S.) and China are the only ones I think of off the top of my head.

There was a report of Russia testing a hypersonic vehicle but I don't recall if it was successful. It was followed by a news article (maybe from India) that automatically assumed the Su-35 deal with China was a trade for hypersonic technology. Highly doubtful but the two events happened around the same time which is why the conclusion was made.
