The only surprise is Communist Party-controlled news organ admitted to false economic data. It's important to note recent a Western study by Beibei Bao and Daniel Rosen on China's Bureau of Statistics said it, on general, did a good job of filtering/correcting bad data from provinces and gave the Beijing Mandarins fairly accurate economic data to make decisions and enact policies.

One number was more than double the real one.

Local officials from China’s key Northeast region have reportedly admitted that they faked economic data over the past few years when the real numbers were much lower.

Several officials have said they’ve significantly overstated data ranging from fiscal revenue and household income to GDP, and that this was a reason why the drop in the figures appears to have been so dramatic this year, reported

while citing further reports from China’s state-run Xinhua News Agency.

“If the past data had not been inflated, the current growth figures would not show such a precipitous fall,” one official was quoted as saying.

The Liaoning province has especially been highlighted for its data discrepancy. According to

, one county in the Liaoning province reported an extra fiscal revenue of 847 million yuan (around $131.3 million) in 2013, which was around 127% higher than the actual number.

The province’s GDP growth three years ago was also reported at 9.5%, which is far above the current figure over the first three quarters of this year of just 2.7%. The Liaoning province accounts for

of the total GDP of Northeast China, and its petrochemical and heavy industry sector makes Liaoning the seventh biggest economic producer among all of China’s provinces.

that local investment figures in the province were inflated by at least 20%. According to China Daily, that translates to nearly 100 billion yuan ($15.7 billion).

by one economist estimated that from 1978 to 2012, China’s GDP actually grew by 7.6%, which would be around 2.6% lower than the official 9.8% figure.

I take this as a good sign that they are taking the right steps to address the issue. You cannot even begin to deal with a problem until your acknowledge that there is a problem.

Saying that, I think there is also a massive amount of confirmation bias in the western media. Simply put, they were determined to find some irregularities, and as soon as they did, they blew it way out of context.

Cue the prominent position given to the work of one single economist, who's work is only notable because of the extremeness of its projections. I would bet good money no one of consequence gave his work much credence at all, and that if you were to look at it in detail, you will find all sorts of bad assumptions and/or data mixed in.

Two wrongs don't make a right. Just because some official figures were inflated does not make the extreme doom Sayers right.

Also, not the loaded title and zero credit given to the Chinese media for breaking the story.

Noticed it says regional government. The Western media likes to over inflate the news to further perpetuate that China's growth or anything good in China is a fake therefore it's okay for the average dummy to go around feeling good for themselves that America is okay, no need for a regime change or anything like that.
