...looking at the image he has highlighted (which i have attached), i think it is actually wider than that i.e. some 30 metres (ie 5 x containers length, not 4, based on the 5 coloured segments shown) if i have interpreted his thinking correctly on this matter.

Anyway, what are the thoughts here on this?
Well, take a look at:

My Post here

Scroll down to the picture showing the Liaoning and its hanger and dimensions.

The hanger on the Liaoning is 26m x 156m, the same as the Kuznetsov.

There is simply not a lot of room to make the hanger wider if they are indeed using the same basic hull form as the Liaoning. They may be able to get a meter or two...but not much.

Making it much wider would involve a change to the basic hull design and it is not my impression that his carrier will do that.

Now, I do believe they can make it quite a bit longer by rebuilding the area forward where the missile silos were on the Varyag. Building from scratch they can easily accommodate that as long as the length does not extend into the area where the hull decreases in width to make that impractical...otherwise, you are back to the basic hull form issue,

But it looks to me that they could easily get another 20m or more forward without doing that.

@drunkmunky:
I would n't be surprised, if China test other engines. Oil-fired Boilers and steam turbines (like the russian scrap as Adm. Kuzn. and Liaoning should have) are possible, but CODAG (Diesels 4 cruising, gas turbines 4 high Speed) for example are also possible. Let's wait and see.
Magic of engineering is that it's never about the single best solution, but the best arrangement of solutions.

Certainly this makes good sense the are following a proven design

I wonder if the island will be any different ?

No question it will be a modern equipped STOBAR well armed

More importantly when commissioned it will give China the ability to have deployed a carrier strike group 24/7 if needed

After a few years of work ups, training and experience there is no reason why China can not have two x STOBAR carriers sailing together in formation with their respective escorts

That would give 48 x J15 aircraft for combat enough to cover and even maintain a air presence over a combat zone

That is a crucial point and opens up a new area of warfare for China

This will take lots and lots of training but the path is clear

Now after 2 x STOBAR China can get the engineering package together for a CATOBAR carrier

This would being the number to 3 carriers, 2 x STOBAR and 1 x CATOBAR

I would think that the CATOBAR would be a 36 x J15 sized carrier probably around the 85,000 ton mark certainly no less

That would total 84 x J15 aircraft or 3-4 naval squadrons

After that it would be hard to predict what comes but most likely CATOBARS bigger and better

extra 20m or so ... means extra ~600m² .... quite significant extra space ~15% more

Yes...it will be quite a bit bigger . 20m will give 520 m sq. more. 25 meters will give 650 m sq. more.

...and it makes sense for them to do this.

They do not need the space to be filled with the old VLS silos...and so why not enlarge the hanger?

One of several improvements I expect on this ship.
