Anyway, I agree with Sampan's assessment that Russia's current moves are more likely designed to curtail any ideas by NATO of imposing a libyan-style "no-fly" zone in Syria. However, once the Russia troops and hardware is in Syria, who knows how things might develop. If China does get involved, which IMO is still doubtful at this point, then they would very likely operate under the SCO banner. It's still hypothetical, IMO, but not that far fetched. After all, the SCO didn't conduct all these military exercises just for show, right?

I think at this time, Russia is largely bluffing. They've flow some impressive aircraft into Syria but that doesn't mean they are planning to or have the means to conduct a sustained air and/or ground campaign. Where are the logistics components, like fuel and munitions, necessary to conduct a sustained campaign going to come from and how are they going to get to Syria?
Russia wants to play a role in Syria, and I think it can play a constructive role, but not without help. It is time for the anti-fascist alliance of WWII to come together again to defeat this new threat.

I only recently read that both Syria and Egypt asked this summer to be allowed to become SCO members. Egypt too has a large army that might help in Syria.

Russia does have a large naval and air base in Syria.
The combat aircraft and other hardware gets all the headlines because they are the most visible and high profile, but it would make little sense for the Russians to not also stockpile munitions, and especially fuel at those bases.
Those can be shipped in either by air or by sea.
In addition, I think logistics and support would be a key area that China would be very well suited to providing.
I have a feeling that there are very intense diplomatic efforts going on behind closed doors right now, as the Russians would not like to be out acting unilaterally any more than America.
They will do if they have to, but they would much rather also have the diplomatic and material support of a powerful ally like China.
Which may be why they have been holding off on actually launching any air strikes, and maybe also why some in the west are trying to almost push Russia into making a move prematurely and alone. Probably so they can launch a vicious and sustained PR and diplomatic offensive against the Russians in the hopes of being able to warn China off from joining the Russians.

Given the same situation ... ...
I wonder how many regular Chinese citizens or Chinese Officials will get scared by you-know-who, thus avoid joining Russia to create a solid economic front of Iran, Iraq and Syria.
Especially those corrupt Chinese officials ( those corrupt & exclusive 500 families ) who have tons of financial asset hiding in US or family members in US, sacrificing national benefits for personal gains.
Those are the one who get scared so easily.

Its a good thing such people would never have the ultimate say in China.
This is getting OT, but who do you think would end up as China's new ruling elite class if China followed all of the West's prescriptions and went democratic? Especially if they went with the American model for democracy? When was the last time anyone saw a poor man win office in America?
