Admiralty Shipyards held a ceremonial launching of diesel-electric submarine Krasnodar in Saint Petersburg, Russia, on April 25.

This is the fourth in a series of six submarines being built by Admiralty Shipyards for the Russian Navy.

The first in the series, Novorossiysk, was delivered to Russian Navy in August 2014; the second, Rostov-on-Don, in December 2014, and the third, Stary Oskol, successfully completed its state trials. The remaining two submarines, Veliky Novgorod and Kolpino, are currently under construction.

Krasnodar was laid down in February 2014. The vessels are of the modified 636 project and feature updated combat operations.

The export version of these subs is, I believe, the 636M like what Vietnam is getting.

As far as I know, Project 636.6 subs still don't have Air-independent propulsion (AIP) and this is one of the major limiting factors of Russian diesel-electric fleet . Maximum submerged range is just 400 miles at 3 knots , according to the Russian wikipedia

I will believe it when I see it.

Like building another carrier, or some of the other plans they announce...I think they are going to be severely limited by budget, and are in the process of designing a new bomber anyway.

I do not think, in the current environment, that there is any chance that they could do both.

A completely new production line, with full modernization for that old design, would be in essence building a new aircraft...and if they are going to do that...I see them putting that effort into the new bomber, not a 1970s design that first flew in 1981 and achieved IOC in 1987, almost 30 years ago.

They may indeed modernize a few...all they have is a few anyway...like 16 I believe.

I have similar feelings, Jeff. Maybe that re-opening of the production line is intended is some type of a spin-up for the designers / engeniers and so on?
Besides the Su-34 tactical bomber, I believe the Russians haven't built any proper large combat aircraft for quite some time now.
Maybe that Tu-160 production will gradually move towards building PAK-DA prototypes. Or PAK-DA is already a bit late, maybe ... ?

Yep seems nevertheless difficult, a little strange.
16 in service, 13 to Engels in the only frontline unit and up to 6 to Joukovski, flight test center and Aktioubinsk, weapons test center, with some no operationnals.

The more big combat aircraft never build, 275 t, 148 t of fuel !!! ... but B-1B carry a more big load with her external hard points 57 vs 40.
