The 1000th Thread...traveling And Backpacking

I have always wanted to take this 1000th thread title, but I need a good reason to take it. Let's go with travel, since I'm plannin' on doing backpacking soon.

Any destinations or tips for traveling and backpacking?
Or should I say, who here had done those?

Anywhere in southern California, Yellowstone National Park is probably all snow right now.

If you like to travel cheap, I highly recommend Peru. I had a great trip there, ate like a king and spent very little money. The old Inca capital of Cusco is a beautiful town. A great mixture of indigenous and Spanish colonial architecture. If you are in decent shape, the hike from Cusco to Machu Picchu takes about a week and the scenario and culture along the way is out of this world. Give yourself several days to adapt to the high altitude before you start partying. I hit the local brandy hard on my first night there and almost passed out in the bar. Make some friends in the hostel, heard some stories of petty robbery on tourists, never had a problem myself by always traveling in group after dark. The local people are very friendly in general.
