Ukrainian defence industry representatives at this year's Air Show China have told IHS Jane's that one of the options being discussed for providing an affordable and effective ground attack capability for the country's air force would be to develop a localised variant of the Chinese-made Hongdu L-15 advanced jet trainer/light attack aircraft.

According to this proposed plan, empty L-15 fuselages would be sent to Ukraine from China and fitted out with Ukrainian-produced systems.

"This idea has two practical aspects to it," said a Ukrainian defence industry official. "We have the Ivchenko AI-222-25 engine for this aeroplane that is produced here in Ukraine - the same engine that the Chinese are using in this aircraft - but we also have here in Ukraine the ability to fit our own, non-Chinese avionics, radar, and weapon systems onto this aircraft.

if l15 does end up as a light attack ac in ukraine's hands and somehow the whole war is still going on and it sees action and gets shot down repeatedly (which it might, considering all) - that's going to be some bad publicity for l15. Media rarely look into whole context...
