Russia selects engine supplier for new bomber: report

Russia has turned to a familiar source – the Kuznetsov Design Bureau – to develop the engines for a next-generation bomber, according to a report dated 6 June in a state-run newspaper.

The Volga Commune, the official newspaper of Russia’s Samara region, quotes Nikolai Jakushin, executive director of Kuznetsov, as confirming that his company will develop the engines for the new bomber called the prospective aviation complex for long-range aviation (PAK-DA).

The selection was “not so long ago”, Jakushin says, and guarantees Kuznetsov a stream of funding and production for more than 20 years, according to the newspaper.

Kuznetzov designed the turbine jet and propeller engines that power all three of the bombers in the Russian fleet, including the Tupolev Tu-95 and Tu-160 bombers that will be replaced by the PAK-DA.

Though it designed Russia’s most powerful engines for combat aircraft, Kuznetzov had suffered a long-term decline until a recent revival, Jakushin says in the Russian news article.

Russia has spent the last decade developing the PAK-FA, a stealth fighter designed by Sukhoi. As the programme transitioned from the drawing boards to flight tests, the air force’s focus has turned to modernising an aging bomber fleet.

In April, Tupolev, a design bureau within United Aircraft, finalised the conceptual design of the new bomber. The company is now working to design and build a prototype, according to local reports.

Russian commander says MiG-35 equal to U.S. F-35 fighter

The Russian military will use new MiG-35D multirole fighters as an equal to the U.S. F-35 fighters, the Air Force chief said on Tuesday.

"We have not given up on the MiG-35D light aircraft project, but we will transfer to the T-50 [heavy fighter] in the future," Gen. Alexander Zelin, the Russian Air Force commander, said during his visit to the six-day air show MAKS-2011 that opened near Moscow on Tuesday.

The U.S. Air Force began using the F-22 fifth generation fighter in the 2000s. America is now developing a lighter and less expensive version, the F-35.

The MiG-35 is an advanced derivative of theMiG-29, which uses air-to-air and air-to-surface guided missiles and the Zhuk A radar (Zhuk AE in exports).

17 APRIL 2014 | The Russian Air Force will get another 16 Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-29 SMT fighter-bombers, the Ministry of Defence in Moscow confirmed on 15 April 2014. According to the department Russia pays only about 470 to 480 million US dollar (17 billion rubels) for the aircraft )around $us 30 dollars each.


The MiG-29 SMT, called Fulcrum by NATO, has additional built-in fuel-tanks to fly further, a special paint to reduce its radar profile and is able to operate with a new range of anti-ship and air-to-ground missiles. The Russian Air Force already has 28 of these fighters in its inventory, serving with the Western Military District with the first delivered in 2009.

Moscow also confirmed it wants up to 100 of the new MiG-35Cs it showcased in 2013. Deliveries should commence in 2016. This Fulcrum-F is an even further developed version of the MiG-29 with a better active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar, more powerful engines, a Optical Locator System and a better ability to engage multiple targets in the air and on sea / on the ground at the same time. The MiG-35 will be able to carry a higher weapons load at nine external stations, an increased fuel capacity, an in-flight refuelling system and a fly-by-wire system that has three-channels and quadruple redundancy. Mikoyan-Gurevich’s general director Sergei Korotkov calls the MiG-35 a 4th Plus Plus generation fighter.

The flights of Yak-130 jets will be resumed in July

The flights of Yak-130 operational trainers will be resumed in July 2014. The Yak-130 fleet was grounded after a crash occurred on April 15th 2014 near Akhtubinsk, Lenta.ru reports with reference to Russian Ministry of Defense.

In addition, the ministry confirmed the plans for creation of the Yak-130 aerobatic team called “Krilya Tavridi” (The Wings of Tavrida). The team will comprise four jets and later two more aircraft will join it. The establishment of the team was started in November 2013. At present Russian air forces comprise four aerobatic teams: Russian Knights (Kubinka, operates Su-27 fighters), Strizhi (Kubinka, operates MiG-29 fighters), Sokoli Rossiyi (stand for Falcons of Russia, Lipetsk, operates Su-27 jets) and Torzhok-based helicopter aerobatic team Berkuti.

The crash of Yak-130 near Akhtubinsk (Astrakhan Region) occurred due to control system failure. The crew comprising two pilots has managed to eject, but one of the pilots died.

Yak-130 is the two-seat next-generation operational trainer developed by Yakovlev design bureau. It is intended for pilot training and combat missions performed under normal and severeweather conditions. The jet is capable of destroying ground and air targets. The jet’s aircraft performance coupled with the capabilities of its control system make it suitable for training of future pilots of “4+”-generation and fifth-generation fighters.

Adding more confusion about what SMT really is . So far Mig-29SMT was standing for upgraded stored airframes, and Mig-29M/M2 supposed to be newly build land-based version of Mig-29K . Finally, Mig-35 should be further upgrade of Mig-29M .

Fire damages PAK-FA prototype on landing

Sukhoi has played down the impact on its T-50/PAK-FA programme of a fire that damaged one of the five flight test aircraft while on the ground at Zhukovsky air base near Moscow on 10 June.

The company says smoke was observed coming from the fighter’s starboard engine air intake during landing, and a fire broke out shortly afterwards.

However, the blaze was “quickly extinguished”, says Sukhoi, and the aircraft will now be repaired. “This incident will not affect the timing of the T-50 test programme,” it adds.

Speaking to Flightglobal on 5 June, Mikhail Pogosyan, president of Sukhoi parent United Aircraft, had praised the results from the current round of testing.

They “confirm the schedule of the programme and all the targeted milestones that we have to run through”, he says. Five prototypes were participating in the test and certification work, which is due to conclude in 2015, ahead of first delivery envisioned for 2016.

Launched earlier this year, the design is in the second phase of flight test activity, which is being carried out in conjunction with the Russian air force – Sukhoi’s principal customer for the stealthy type.

A previous evaluation programme to validate the PAK-FA’s performance was concluded in 2013. The new activities cover onboard equipment such as avionics.

Work on the type’s final assembly line at the KnAAPO plant in Komsomolsk-on-Amur is also complete, Pogosyan adds. "We have prepared for the launch of production in parallel with the flight test programme. It won't require much additional time to develop serial production.”

It looks like most of the damage came from the middle top of the plane. Power systems overheated perhaps?

Sukhoi's claim that the fire won't affect the testing schedule is rather optimistic.

According to the Russian wikipedia, this is latest prototype, with first flight in October last year. First prototype of second phase (bort number 56) would be used only for static tests. Flying prototypes of second phase (56 (same as static prototype),57 and 58) should be completed this year and first flights are scheduled for this year also.
