PLAN ASW Capability

PLAN is often said to have poor ASW capability. One example often brought up is the small size of the bow sonar on even modern PLAN ship such as 054A. Is it possible that PLAN is using smaller MF sonar rather than big lower frequency sonar such as SQS-35 because its present ASW mission is mainly littoral ASW within the first island chain? Is higher frequency sonar inherently superior in a littoral environment?

This is how Zumwalt's sonar set is described.
"A dual-band sonar controlled by a highly automated computer system will be used to detect mines and submarines. It is claimed that it is superior to the Burke's sonar in littoral ASW, but less effective in blue water/deep sea areas.[62]

Hull-mounted mid-frequency sonar (AN/SQS-60)
Hull-mounted high-frequency sonar (AN/SQS-61)
Multi-function towed array sonar and handling system (AN/SQR-20)"

this is an American study of littoral ASW, the hypothetical scenario is Australian aggression against Tasmania :)
It will take a while to read the whole thing, but it already provide the answer I was looking for earlier. Low frequency sonar doesn't provide the precision necessary to conduct ASW in the crowded littoral environment. The discussion of bow sonar size is largely irrelevant in the littoral ASW context anyway because a sonar that can't change depth is largely useless by itself in the littoral environment.

read some more about littoral ASW. the challenges are considerable. more than the temperature layers and salinity layers which restrict sonar performance, there are many sunken ships, schools of fish and other debris difficult to distinguish from submarines.
the performance of hull mounted sonar is really the least important in the littoral environment. surface warships equipped with even the best sonars can perform little more than self-defense in the constricted littoral environment.
more persistent means of monitoring are necessary. UUAV, clandestine sensor networks are necessary.
Since the littoral environment negates most of the traditional American advantages in ASW, I think the PLAN can have an advantage by playing in its home field and keep up with the technological advancements.

This bird could significantly enhance land-based asw capability if it becomes operational and be given a suitable ASW-electronics suite.
Thereby freeing the larger, long-range, conventional patrol-aircraft of the first-islands patrols so they can fully exploit their longrange advantage.

Is this an actual PLAN project? Or just a proposal?

Any idea when they plan to produce them and how many?

Looks like a nice aircraft.

What are the engines and why are the propellers four bladed rather than six bladed? It seems to be rather smaller than the old SH-5 but if it will serve the islands in the SCS it doesn't need to be large. Most transport will continue to be by ship and those garrisons and communities are small. And as an ASW aircraft it seems comparable in size to the Lockheed S-3.

Here is the SH-5 for comparison. They look about the same size, probably a direct replacement. The SH-5s are really, really, really old. Even by PLAN standards.

Not sure if posted before, but found a pdf that a shows a pics of TA and AD on each ship.

I posted that link earlier, but not in this thread. I think VDS and higher frequency sonars would be relevant in the littoral environment. It seems the latest 056 variant will have VDS.
