QTS-11 OICW. 5.8 mm Heavy and 20 mm Air Burst.

I think that less advanced optics could very well be heavier instead. If they're trying to pack all the same features into their sights with inferior tech, then it would be larger, heavier, yet less capable. On the other hand, yes, they could be lighter, if one also assumes that the Chinese have intentionally excluded some things from their wanted-feature list.

As you might notice, the big Trapezoid-thing that goes where the telescopic sights go that are common to other OICWs are missing from the ZH-05. If anything, I'm guessing they threw out the ballistic computer and gave it a plain x4 magnification scope, laser designator, and fuse setter.

I'd reckon that the Chinese solved the weight problem by their usage of those "less advanced optics".

The Ballistic computer/Thermal telescopic sight of the XM25 for example, weighs 1.15 kg alone.

If China did in fact replace that Sensor suite with a less advanced and thus lighter one, that might put the weight at that 5 kg number. 5 kg isn't that far off from "normal" actually, as the XM25 weighs only 5.45 kg unloaded and without the Sensor suite.

Just a quick add-edit, for those who don't think that OICWs are important for the near future, here's a quick graph of Realistic combat ranges the U.S. Military faces in Afghanistan:

Image100.jpg

So it's quite obvious that there is no small-caliber Infantry assault rifle in mass service today that can deal with those ranges, other than say, a OICW, with the XM25 as an example, it provides over 700 m of lethal carnage.

I think that might be true in open area and small combat team. If the war theater was to be something like WW2, I think US and any fighting country would commit fully with helicopter, IFV, Tanks, Jets, Mobile Howitzer and mortar. The range would definitely decrease since you would be using IFV and armor to punch through defensive line in open areas. The other thing is fighting in capital and major urban city.

IMO I think what the US did was better, separate the OICW into 2 weapon such as your rifle and XM25.

If future technology allows more compact systems, I think it would be best to have current under rifle grenade launcher such as gp-30/25 or m203 and small laser range finder to set the fuse of the grenade to be attach to the current rifles.

You could easily squeeze in a ballistics computer between the stock and scope (that block). Problem is, it won't be as robust as the one on the K-11 (military electronics are much more heavier than their civilian counterparts for several reasons).

First lets take one thing into account the rifle component of this is little better then the M16. it's a conventional Qbz03 mod. the Grenade launcher and fire control is the part of interest
Given the size of the Sight That has too be part of the solution too the weight problem, although one of the images resembles a thermal rifle sight.
I am now pretty much convinced unless something comes out saying otherwise that the Grenade launcher is bolt action. Likely a straight pull bolt too ease in operation like the Way the Bolt on the M26 works. this would keep the weight down combine with a Simplified Sighting system, single unit construction ( meaning that the Two parts can only be used as one and are not actually capable of being used apart.) factor in polymer magazines possibly a shorter barrel and it could shave some weight.

Possible precursors to this supposed ZH-05?

For some reason the second picture makes me think the soldier is korean... though the words on the targeting computer/optics is obviously chinese.

Here comes the much needed helping hand:

The 2nd pic, the simplified Chinese character reads: “单兵武器火控系统” - and, I don't wish to spoil the actual meaning by my poor English, (and I REALLY recommand you guys forget the CRAP google translation or what's-so-ever-dictionary.) So we can wait another kind soul to do the job more properly.

"Actually it was the uniform and general "build" which looked unlike any I've seen on PLA troops." - Bltizo at #7. What if I tell you, that this pic has been released at around 1990's? Cause I have seen this pic as early as 2002.

Those gears, that 四不像 uniform (四不像-unlike anything yet feels have many thing's aspect), is exactly the situation of 1990's era, the CHAOTIC standard of PLA individual gears among different branchs / ranks / arms of services...

And you guys really poor at recognizing east asian faces. If that guy knows you consider him a korean, he will hunt you down, and commit suicide after that.

You do know the movie "Red Dawn" (2011 version) gets away by hiring ethnic Koreans as actors, when they can't get any ethnic Chinese for it (by what I've read, the ethnic Chinese flat-out refused the job), right?

And let me remind you, most white people can't tell apart the ethnicity of Asians, all are "yellow monkeys" to them.

Yup, propaganda movie like "Red Dawn", always need some "**** monkeys"(don't mind the color) to play a part as the bad guys, even if we are to stay on topic, I say sensable people like the ones in this forum, should choose not to watch that kind of crap to make someone actually PROFITING FROM CRAP.

Back to topic, I suppose you have the ability to translate the above Chinese into "military standard" English, right? Cause I don't think “火控系统” should simply translate into "Ballistic Computer system"; otherwise, how you gonna translate “弹道系统”?

“火控系统” is Fire-control system, whereas “弹道系统” is Ballistic computer system.

No more Red Dawn related discussions, please get back to topic.
