Re: New Generation Fighter
For me, same as above, not only if the engines are already chinese that would be the first 100% chinese plane, and would be strange considered how advanced it is (J10 still uses AL31, and J11B, with chinese engines, is directly derived from russian airframe) but is also "suspicious" the appearance of two article in these days, in Jane's and in WPost, that state basically that China is incapable to build reliable turbofans: they would lose face if this situation is gonna change so soon and the issue timing of these article could be related exactly to J20.

If not already mentioned, i would add that a so big nose could allow the displacement of a lot of AESA T/R modules, thus resulting in a very powerful radar . For example USA source stated that F35 will use advanced avionics compared to F22, but due to airframe limitations the radar of F35 will have shorter detection range than the one onboard on F22: maybe china opted for this design to compensate the J20 disavantage with USA avionics/stealth (or maybe is only a matter of aereodinamic of the plane)
forget about Jane's and .... every time they hope chinese lose face, but they always disapiont,I stop to talk this. why do you guy think WS-10a is not mature? because J-10 still used AL31f?
I can say WS-10a is ok, the fact is China manufacture engines less experience than Russia and Western, so, when China mass produce WS-10a, it's production process slower than Russia and West, to produce one engine like WS-10a, needs 10 thousand of parts from different manufactures, what I said the point is that WS-10a is qualify for mass production, qualify for equip advanced fighter, because only the annual production is not enough,so, china still import Russia engines, now, J-11BS start to service in PLANAF,the answer can be proved.
then, how many WS-10 that J-20 need now? J-20 only two of prototypes right now, China can provide the best WS-10 for them, you know J-20 at least 5-6 years then start to service PLA, what's the condition WS-10 will be? do you think China manufacture engines always slow? they will faster year after year, lets to see how fast is China defence development in this year.
just like a man lean to run, maybe the man only runs one km today, after one year he could run two km. if China can manufacture 100 WS-10a engines this year, few years later China may manufacture 200 WS-10a, and China may manufacture WS-10b as well, China is a large country, with its powerful economic strength, the accumulation of scientific and technological strength, make every effort to do something, nothing is impossible.
maya is engine expert, he said J-20 will use WS-10 that means the engine is ok, we are just little man, we don't know how is chinese engine development right now, we don't know how is WS-10B and WS-15 development right now, we don't need to worry about.
again,Janes has reported so much rumors about China defence in years.

I cant wait to get a upside view of this plane. I wonder how it will compare to the t-50 and even f-22 and f-35. I think time will tell. However I also cant help but wonder how china will handle its perennial aircraft engine bottleneck. I mean, ws-10a isnt even fully matured for the j-11b, and j-20 already will be flying soon. They really need to urgently adress the engine bottleneck, cause if not, then yeah, they could really end up having to purchase engines from russia.
I wont say 117S, because i doubt that russia will sell them anytime soon. But other engines are a possibility.
