Three Ground Self Defense Force members died and one was injured following a tank explosion on the morning of the 21st at the Hijudai Maneuver Area in Oita Prefecture.
According to the Ministry of Defense, the accident occurred at approximately 8:39 a.m. while the Western Army Tank Unit was conducting firing drills at the Hijudai Maneuver Area. A shell exploded, resulting in four casualties among the personnel on board a Type 10 tank. In total, three SDF members lost their lives and one remains injured.
The Hita Kusu Wide Area Fire Department reported receiving an emergency call from the SDF at around 8:40 a.m. stating that a tank had exploded during training at the Hijudai Maneuver Area and that four people were injured.
A 45 year old man and a 28 year old man were confirmed dead, and a 32 year old man is reported to be in a state of cardiopulmonary arrest. A 21 year old woman sustained injuries but is conscious and able to communicate. The Ground Self Defense Force is currently investigating the cause of the explosion.
