China as a Super Power

Agreed with what you have said. But I believe that the main thing about those countries not going to attend might not just stamp from China's growing influence alone.

I have read some of what Liu Xiao Bo had written and presented... and seriously I would have slapped him right across his face if I had the chance. The most memorable one was that he suggested/ proposed that China should be colonise for 300 years (I think), seeing how Hong Kong is doing... this is what I would call the thoughts of a 奴才...

I mean... no matter what is the state of China... or any independent nation, it should never come to this thought. It is a traitrous thought... plus at China's present status as compared to say twenty years ago... isn't it better and better. I mean... even US and England, took hundreds of years to finally get to what they are today. Modern China only had fifty plus years... and after so much turmoil and stuff... and this supposedly nobel prize winner, would simply brush away all these efforts and said that it would be better that China was colonised for 300 years... I don't know about you guys... but any proud chinese would have slapped him across the face.

Liu xiao bo is in the pay of NED (National Endowment for Democracy), which is funded by US government. NED has a track record of funding groups and people to destabilize foreign government that are not friendly to US. Dalai Lama is one of the people/group funded by NED.

This is why Obama can get this award because he is the boss.

It's a dumb opinion to have yes but I don't think people should be imprisoned for having and expressing opinions.

Liu was not imprisoned for expressing that opinion. He was imprisoned for distributing and promoting subversive material, ie Charter 08.

That said, one really has to question the Nobel Peace Prize committee's decision to award the Prize to someone who advocates colonizing China. What does that say about the Peace Prize's ethics?

wow, this reminds me of some of the crap published during the Tibet riots:

article said:
Meanwhile back in Norway, Lundestad told the Star by phone Tuesday that China’s campaign in Oslo has extended beyond foreign embassies: people of Chinese descent living in Norway have also come under “direct pressure” from the embassy to protest the award.

“The embassy has been very active in organizing protests by Chinese in Norway against this year’s prize,” Lundestad said. “I have received several phone calls from Chinese living in Norway who have told me about this pressure and the pressure is so strong that nobody — absolutely nobody — is willing to stand up and defend the prize publicly.”

Lundestad said he had been told that local Chinese people would face “repercussions” and “consequences” if they did not comply with embassy wishes.

And he said a group of Chinese-Norwegians is planning a demonstration against the award Friday.

“They’ve already made application to the police,” he said. “I don’t know how big it will be. But of course there have been protests at other awards ceremonies.”

I have a real hard time imagining how the Chinese government would be able to pressure overseas Chinese, especially those who are Norvegian citizens.

I have a strong suspicion it's like the protest we had in March 29th, 2008. Thousands of Chinese Torontonians turned up to protest the western coverage of the Tibet riots. The media ends up saying that those who showed up were "Chinese students" and that they were forced to do so because "Chinese embassy controlled their visas".

Nevermind the fact that:

1- Chinese embassies don't control Chinese students' visas: the Canadian government does!

2- So many people of Canadian citizenship and permanent residents also attended, including myself. I've seen old grandfathers and families who brought along their kids.

Anyway, since I don't live in Norway, I can only speculate. Anyone have more first-hand info?

I liked this paragraph in the article:
Nobel secretary Geir Lundestad said in a telephone interview Tuesday that he could not recall a higher number of countries “unable to attend” during his 20 years at the Nobel Foundation — saying it might be “the highest” number ever.
China.org reported something similar, saying over 100 "countries and organizations" had refused to attend.

Frankly, I wonder if this is the cost of a NATO membership application.

To put a better perspective on it, The majority of the countries that have been invited are still attending

"........At least 44 of the 65 embassies that have been invited have accepted the invitation, the Nobel Peace Prize Committee has said. But a total of 18 countries, plus China, have said they will not be going: Russia, Kazakhstan, Colombia, Tunisia, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Serbia, Iraq, Iran, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Venezuela, the Philippines, Egypt, Sudan, Ukraine, Cuba and Morocco".

To put it in another perspective, of all the countries in the world, only 44 accepted and the rest rejected or told them not to even bother sending the invitations. :D

Proof...? eg A copy of a letter from say São Tomé and Principe to the Norwegian govt, asking them not to bother sending an invitation.

It also worth noting that the number of invitations they sent out 65 is pretty close to the number of Diplomatic mission 63 includingTaiwan that are represented there.

It's interesting that neither Iraq nor Afghanistan are attending.

Actually, if you look at the invitation list, they even included Sudan, Venezuela, Cuba and Serbia as if they didn't know these countries would reject the invitation to attend this western propaganda event.
Like I said, most likely they invited all nations to attend but only 44 agreed.
Sudan, Venezuela, Cuba and Serbia etc which the west tries to portray as rogue nations are included in the publicized invitation list as a ploy to somehow show only these countries sided with China. The rest on the absence list are probably those who indicated they wanted to attend and changed their mind after invitations were sent out.
It shows what a joke this whole propaganda event is. LOL
