The problem with the US is that they are fighting protracted conflict from a long distance and two boats even if they manage to land marines how they will keep the supply lines open without the Persian Gulf becoming a graveyard of ships. These marines will die from drones, shelling attacks, hunger and dehydration (because there is not water in this islands)

I think the marine will be ordered to occupy the export terminals on Kharg island . If it is lightly defended, a few squad will be sufficient
It would be a brinksmanship game where Iran would have to make a painful decision to blow up their own critical infrastructure and oil revenue to kill the marines and US willing to increase oil price and lose face when the marines are killed

too close to the Iranian coast, basically precision artillery range and drones and lightly defended is an assumption because different from US the Iranians prepared themselves, how the US know that the Iranians didn't set a trap in that Islands and the Island is more protected that expected with tunels and so on. I know it is really close, and they can hit precisely at that range with drones, but if they do occupy within the terminal, you will have to either CQB or blow up the building.

I am not saying it is necessary a easy fight for USMC, I actually believe it will very bloody but that is only objective I can see them doing with only 5000 men.

Is this plan seriously being discussed? That island is literally a one-way cemetery. No one will be able to stand on it for more than 5 minutes without getting converted into a red puddle of liquid.
