In view of the vast quantities of AK-630 (or AK-306, it is difficult to spot the difference) going to Type 022, they are sure to produce it locally. Anyway, the Chinese ones display a number of differences from the original.

Y'know, it'd be nice if the 998 would stop by Hong Kong on its way back home...though I can bet the ticket going to be even harder to get than the time 529 stop over at Hong Kong.

re: PLAN Type 071 LPD & its Landing Craft

I wonder why they are still using AK630s on the 071. Do they make these domestically or are they imported from Russia?

they use AK-630Ms because they are cheap and enough for Type 071. If they get an unit of HQ-10, it'd be plenty of self defense for 071.

China got license production for AK-630M a while back. Same with AK-176M I think.

I suspected as much as it would make sense given how many 022s they have been building, but its good to know for sure. Cheers for clearing that up.

I supposed trying to put in 730s would have required a design change as they could not have simply gone where the AKs were.

Given the number of lives potentially at stake, i would have prefered 730s and HQ10s, but since there should be FFG and DDG support if deployed in z warzone, it would probably have been overkill.

I wonder if they will put the ak630 to other use when they finally stop making 022s. Can easily see a land defense verson like the LD2000, but i digress...

re: PLAN Type 071 LPD & its Landing Craft

If they put too much weapons onto the LPD, then it'd pretty much defeat the purpose, or most importantly, denied valuable carrying capacity, of which is its primary purpose. Besides, LPD ain't designed to charge into range of enemy's coastal guns, it's to unload troops offshore into helicopters and LCACs, and let them make the assault, thus the LPD would leave the primary defense to the taskforce's frigates and destroyers, as well as the supporting aviation assets.

So whatever the 071 class LPD is adequate for its task, though if they add 2 FL-3000N point-defense missile turrets could improve its defensive capability, at a small cost of weight perhaps.

And this could be old news but if what released on CCTV can be counted as official, then that they said the 071 LPD can carry up to 4 LCACs could be counted at the official prove of its capacity.

pictures from the latest 071 that was launched. These are the up-close pictures of the different part of the ship.
We see the AK-176M, the multi purpose rocket launcher, the foremast with Type 360 and SR-64.

now we have shots showing different parts of the ship and the ship as a whole. I really would like to do a comparison of this vs 998, but away from home right now, so don't have my normal photo collection.

The question is regarding CIWS and self defense missiles, not so much offensive weapons, which would actually be in line with the ship's misison. That deck one level lower right in front of the bridge looks like it was designed to accommodate 2-4 VLS cells. A similar deck exists on the San Antonio class that was designed for 4 Mk-41 VLS cells but they ended up deciding against putting them in. If the desire were there, they could probably arm this ship with better air defense.

i don't know if anyone else feels the same way, but I'm kinda scared and shocked on how fast they finished the 071. It's freakishly fast.
But I guess if anyone can do things in speed its China. They have 24/7 shifts. Unlike us, we don't work at night and only work during weekdays. If China really needs it, prioritizes it, and invest enough resources into it they can get it done ASAP. Compared to the Carrier which they have been have limping into it in priority and resources.

GREAT pics tphuang!

Two LPDs now. The 071s are fine looking vessels and will add significant amphibious capability to the PLAN, particularly as more are built.

With the new DDG, the progress on the Varyag, the LPD, more subs, and more FFGs, this has turned into a real banner year for production for the PLAN.
