To re-emphasize, China should focus on generation leaping technologies:

- Go straight to wireless communication instead of landlines

- Go straight to LCD panels instead of CRT

- Go straight to radical stealth FAC like Type 022 instead of conventional corvettes

- Go straight from H-6 series to hypersonic bomber, skipping B-1B lancer and B-2 spirit generations

- Go straight to electromagnetic catapult on instead of steam catapult (by 2020)

- Go straight to stealth naval fighter for China's first mass produced carrier instead of flanker naval fighter (by 2020)

- Go straight to J-20 from J-10A, skipping J-10B

Some of your suggestions make some sense, like skipping the B-1 or the steam catapult, and the reason is that China currently has no pressing need for bombers or CATOBAR carriers. As for skipping the J-10B, it should only be done if J-10A's are used instead to make up the numbers. I'd argue that it's better to make some J-10B's though.

There's a big difference between going from CRT to LCD and going from an obsolete design like H-6 to a freaking hypersonic bomber never mind B-1 or B-2...
We all know how conservative the PLA is with their military equipment -- they don't want anything cutting edge or revolutionary just yet; just something good enough, and something that works.
(Skipping J-10B, hypersonic bomber, a new class of naval fighter and EM catapult... Some of those may be possible, espicially the last two, but when you say "should" it just sounds like a wet dream :/ )


Besides what China can do and what china should do are two completely different things.

Besides what China can do and what china should do are two completely different things.

I think skipping the B-1/F-117 type of bomber/striker is possible, as China has no need for strategic bombers any time soon. They can develop the necessary components on other commercial and military aircrafts first for say another 30 years or so before attempting to build a bomber.

I agree that China has no need for a strategic bomber (and certainly not like the supersonic B-1 or small payload F-117 (J-20 should be able to fill the latter's role like the F-22 does)) -- BUT, China doesn't need a hypersonic bomber even more, and under any circumstance I really doubt they would build a hypersonic bomber before a more conventional one like B-2 or a UCAS type UCAV (see warrior eagle).

There was speculation by Richard fisher that China may be pursuing space based orbital bombers (satellites perhaps? :S), so that could be where this idea came from. Maybe in fifty years we'll see something like that.

Right, well then you gotta specify...

But I myself doubt the J-10B will not go into production.
If it doesn't go into production it still hardly means China's "skipping" from J-10A to J-20... They might (and probably will) be continuing J-10A production instead to fill the ranks of J-7 and J-8 still in service.

(And again, nowhere in his page does huitong support any of your other claims -- just gotta make that clear for any readers of this thread. And if China doesn't mass produce J-10B, by all means it does not mean they're skipping B-1 and B-2 to hypersonic bombers or steam to EMCAT, or naval flanker to next gen naval fighter or whatever. Phew)

I see no reason why the J-10B won't go into production if they're bothering to produce three or four prototypes.

You don't need to build a B-1 or B-2 bomber before building a hypersonic bomber, or at least a Mach 3-4 bomber like the XB-70. The XB-70's technology was already available in the 1960s to 70s and can still mess with modern SAMs the way the SR-71 outruns missiles due to a combination of handling characteristics at high altitude and speed.

It will be stupid for China not to produce the J-10B. 4th and 4.5 generation fighters will stay in the U.S. airforce till about 2030 and they'll stay in service even longer in China's neighboring states. Given how expensive 5th gen fighters are I don't think China could produce enough to provide sufficent defence coverage of the whole country.
