The Indian scholars and businessmen are taking for granted that India will become the 3rd largest economy in the world. Sunil Barthi Mittal is saying that it's "written in the stars". Comments section is interesting.

Sunil Mittal said that China had a "free pass" with the US market in the past. India doesn't have that today, but it has a 1.5 billion strong consumer market. So he is basically saying that India doesn't need the world market to grow into the third largest economy. Who needs the US and Chinese market anyway?

Here's the problem. India joined the WTO in 1995, while China only joined in 2001. So in terms of having a "free pass" with the US market, India had a 6-year headstart over China. So why didn't India ran ahead of China first? Why did US companies predominantly chose to manufacture in Communist China over Democratic India?

The Indian elites have never dared to ask what if India doesn't achieve it's potential. What if India's lack of success vs China is purely self-inflicted? Opportunities were there, and India's opportunities were actually much better than China. But India keeps missing opportunities and then blames others for it. Right now, India is on course to miss yet another opportunity. But this time, Automation and AI would eventually close the best windows of opportunities for India for good. After that, it's the middle income trap.

Indians are the masters of spin. India has the courtesy culture where they will lie to you if they believe you'd rather hear the lie than the truth. That's what happening here. Yeah, why hasn't India caught up and surpassed China if they believe India has all these advantages that China doesn't? It's because there's something wrong about India that prevents that from happening and they don't dare talk about it because none of them want to hear it. Just look at the AI discussion at Davos that someone here posted where the India representative on the panel argued that India was actually in the top tier with the US and China on AI development even though they have no models to show of. Just like everything else, all they have is just saying it and you know they would immediately show it off if they had one.

It's like I saw something on YouTube from BBC Asia talking about how Vietnam is now trying to replicate how China does things but they're not ever going to admit it because they're anti-China. The fact is all countries that are anti-China are just envious and they're not going to learn how China did it because they're they don't want to admit it that China got it right. Look at the Bolsonaro right-wing of Brazil. They hate China because they think they should be where China is at and not China. And because the West is suppose to be the best model of the world, how did they do it? They raped their way to get where they're at. That's why Europe ain't doing so well these days because they no longer have their colonies to take from anymore. They're not going to admit that.

Yet when it comes to serious conversations about itself such as what are the root cause problems in the country, how can it do better, what options to take etc they aren't there. Instead whenever they hear something bad, they will usually just deflect the problem and say that other guy has this problem, why don't you talk about that (and a lot of times the comparison isn't even a good one)? They will just blame someone else and demand the attention shift to that instead. How can one get so mad when others don't really take it seriously yet it isn't serious about itself?

In 1991, India almost went bankrupt and was forced to open its markets. Indian nationalists claim that China simply opened up earlier than India so its really a time thing even though China was an Iron Curtain with no real private stuff until the later 80s while India had a stock exchange. JM Financial which is one of India's best investment banks started in 1973, became a full stockbroking company in 1986 and listed in 1991 (Shanghai stock exchange only started running in 1990) .One of the reasons India had issues back then was coz of high tariffs. Well now has that tariff issue been solved? Oh wait, India still has that problem! So is it really just a time issue or does India have structural issues that still have failed to be addressed after all this time?

It’s even worse than you think, they behave like cargo cult Pacific Islanders who built airplanes out of straw in the belief that the cargos would magically appear. Well similarly these anti China nations do things like 669 in Silicon Valley tech to copy Chinese tech without understanding that 669 also exists in Korea and Japan and neither of those nations are doing as well as China. In fact Korea has the same GDP per capita as Spain who work less hours and don’t have 669.

Here's the problem. India joined the WTO in 1995, while China only joined in 2001. So in terms of having a "free pass" with the US market, India had a 6-year headstart over China. Not to mention that China's WTO accession terms were far worse than India's or any other developing country's for that matter. As a late joiner, China had to negotiate its terms for WTO accession with all existing members and the US and EU imposed many harsh conditions that only applied to China. For example, China had to accept being labeled as a non-market economy, which essentially allowed other countries to freely impose anti-dumping duties against China.

People assume that once you are cancelled in China, you are permanently cancelled. Like how Simu Liu's comments during an interview about how his parents left China when it was third world lead to Shang-Chi getting limited screenings in China and people assuming he would never be let back in. But what do you know last year, he made a big hoopla about going to Beijing for vacation. That case is small fry though compared to Ai WeiWei, who made a career of being anti-China and has now turned a new leaf.

More radical types think having the wrong stance on China warrants lifelong punishments. However, changing people's hearts is one of the hallmarks of a great power and people turning to the light should be welcomed with open arms.

In the final analysis, I think I can confidently say that Mr. Ai Weiwei has lead a colourful life, but is just not a likeable character. So my wish is for him to shut up for good, and never hear from him again.

In hindsight, we got perspective.

All of Ai Weiwei complaining about China, for years and decades, lead to an obvious question. Could Ai Weiwei done a better job of governing the country, or his ideas to govern the country had any merit?

At this point, most people would burst out laughing.

What did Ai Weiwei ever do in life, or accomplish in life, other than complaining? Apparently he came from a rich noble family that lost everything due to the upheavals in Chinese society.

Ai Weiwei should kept his nihilism and defeatism to himself.

People in China are living their life, and for many, their best life. All under the CCP government.

The Indians always spin that India has a population like China, therefore must rise like China. But unlike China, India will never decline because of democracy, religion, and Vishwaguru status. Only good things happen to India. If anything bad happens, it's because other nations sabotaged India. That's their mindset. It's about entitlement, not growth.

China's return to world prominence was not without cost. China has had to struggle through wars, revolutions, poverty, famines, and external threats. This prosperity is earned, not wished for, or taken from someone else. People in the free world tend to lazily see China as if it had only just appeared in 1949. When China was down, nobody gave it a chance to become a future great nation. China doesn't take it's prosperity for granted, and that has been very underappreciated by people in the free world.

India's journey had been different. It's independence was given, not fought for. Until recently, the West have given many favours to India. This have spoiled India into entitlement. So when China became a true superpower, India feels entitled to be called a superpower too. China built up it's military because of the lessons of the Century of Humiliation. But India builds up it's military to conquer, dominate, and show off. Indians believe that they must become the 3rd largest economy in the world, because they are somehow entitled to that.

Now there's social media, and India can no longer hide behind the romanticism of journalists and writers. People around the world can see what the real Mumbai looks like compared to Shanghai. People can watch all the BS that is happening in India, and compare it with the progress of China. India is talking and talking and talking, while China is quietly coming up with new technologies and projects. That's why the Western way of comparing India to China is very lazy analysis.
