JTTW is like King Arthur or Robin Hood on steroids, there are like 50 adaptations of it a year. Please give the audience some room to breath before rolling these out every year.
The old guys from the censoring bureal will censor literally anything, even time-travel. Stick to mindless xianxia/fantasy is as safe as it get. And nothing can beat JTTW in terms of fantasy anyway.

Seriously? Do they give any reason for censoring even trivial stuffs like that? I thought it was mostly political stuffs they censor.

I think thats the disavantages of such policies, since it is basically open to interpretation by the censure in charge, it depends on how he views things, which can cause alot of insecurities for artists who will often engage in self censorship ecen on things that might not have been censored, since they cant be sure what will be allowed or not. Since the policies can also be vague and all encompassing.

I've heard that thing about time travel and skeletons being banned in Chinese media, but is that even true or is it just another myth, like social credit score system? I'm guessing there might technically be a rule on the books like that but it's not actually enforced in any meaningful way. How can it be when something like Link Click has time travel elements?

It's not a blanket ban but there are different categories. They will flat out ban a time travel drama if it contains real historical characters such as Scarlet Heart which features Yongzheng Emperor. They will also ban any drama that let the modern protagonist stay in the past. That's why a lot of time travel drama has bad ending. Pseudo time travel such as Link Click is fine as they do not have historical figures or stay in the past. And there are also 1001 reasons to be censored on the whim of the bureal.

Black Myth had Erlang wearing skulls and a lot of arguably worse stuff.
