Severe Fever with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome (SFTS), also known as tick fever, is a relatively new infectious disease that can potentially cause multi-organ failure and result in a fatality rate of up to 30%. It is caused by a tick-borne virus and is transmitted through tick-bites. SFTS mainly occur in central China with some cases reported in Korea and Japan. It was first discovered in 2009. Until recently, there was no specific treatment. Now, Chinese researchers have developed a potential cure.

‘Terrifying’: Why U.S. senator in top intel post wants more spying on Chinese companies

  • Chinese genomics company BGI has risen to prominence around the world but also has been subject to concerns about its gene sequencing and DNA collection practices.
  • U.S. officials fear BGI’s vast collection of global genomics data is not just intended for precision medicine but a strategic asset that could be used for the Chinese military or surveillance, including the development of a biotech-enabled “super soldier.”
  • Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.), the top Democrat on the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, warned at the CNBC CFO Council Summit this week that BGI will become even bigger than the Chinese telecom giant Huawei. “It’s terrifying,” he said.
If Huawei was big, BGI will be even bigger,” Warner said at the CNBC CFO Council Summit in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday.
