Russia refuse to cancel cruise missile sale to Syria

Despite Israel's objections, Russia will not cancel its sale of advanced missiles to Syria, the Kremlin announced on Sunday.

Haaretz reported on Friday that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had asked his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, to cancel the sale of long-range surface-to-sea cruise missiles to the Syrian Army.

The agreement in question is for P-800 Yakhont missiles, a highly accurate Russian weapon with a 300-kilometer range capable of carrying a warhead of up to 200 kilograms.

If it is the Yakhont I can see why Israel would want this sale to fall through. Not a single surface ship in the Israeli Navy could be considered safe in a war if the Syrians get their hands on this.

Is there any kind of defence against the Yakhont or not?

I have to see it to believe it though. The S-300 business between Russia and Iran has me skeptical of Russian military exports, no offense.

Russia has nothing to care about international political pressure. Even with their "sensible" contracts with countries like Syria. Some countries would be interested in such a position. See USA and France unable to seal weapons and military aircrafts to Taiwan now, not too sensible.

The Israeli Navy already has enough problems with the Iranian made clones of the C803. Syria should have spent its money on something else. This is like buying a LOSAT missile to kill a T-72 when a HJ-8 is good enough.

The thing is that if you are not careful who you sell your arms to, it might bite you in the butt later on. The Americans sold weapons to the Shah of Iran, and then the Iranian Revolution took placed and in Iran, the US went from major ally to the devil overnight.

Does anyone know what's the difference between Yakhont P-800 (also called P-800 Oniks) and the Brahmos missile (developed by Russo-Indian JV).

Well, I do not think the Iranian YJ-'s have a passive radar seeker while the Yakhont does. Meaning even if all the ECMs are operating on the Sa'ars it will still have little difficult hitting. Trying to counter just one of these would be incredibly difficult for them and if they have enough numbers it would be nigh impossible.

At the same time you have to consider that Syria will want at least some defense against American and European ships as any war is likely to involve them. Certainly, if Israel's navy gets essentially obliterated there will be a demand for American ships at least to protect Israeli commercial shipping.
