Chinese Army Needs More Tanks

As we all know, Vietnam has been increasingly hostile in its attitude towards China. Sharing a land border with China, Vietnam is posed to present a challenge to China, especially if its Army gets to purchase US-made M1-A2 Abrams and AH-64 Apache choppers. Their Air Force’s Su-30s pose a threat too! Vietnam might also be able to buy up to 36 F-16Cs or F-15Es or even F-35s armed with AMRAAMs by 2020. Such a possibility might happen, since Vietnam has now improved relations with her former foe USA as they work together to stifle China’s security at her borders and divert China’s attention away from deterring Taiwan separatists.

Following that, it is highly prudent that Chinese Army purchases more T-96 and T-98 MBTs, as well as building and deploying more than 2000 new generation IFVs near the border with Vietnam. Increasing China’s defence budget to 8% of GDP annually,China should have a force of 6000 T-96s and 1800 T-98s by 2020, and deploy 30%-40% of those tanks near the Vietnamese border. The aim of that deployment is to deter Vietnamese aggression and if war breaks out, gives the Chinese army the ability to quickly rout Vietnam’s ground forces and capture Hanoi within a week after hostilities started. Of course, by that time PLA will have decent and massively overwhelming fire support from the PLAAF’s aircraft armed with PGMs and Ground-Launched LACMs, MLRS ,SRBMs and artillery guns that will deliver accurate fire to destroy Vietnamese army’s assets.

So, what do you guys think? Do you agree that China needs more tanks to prepare for a Vietnam contingency? PLA military planners must always prepare for the unexpected, and lay decent preparations to meet real and hypothetical threats since no one can predict the future. As a future superpower, China needs an army powerful enough that will make any nation that shares a land border with her to tremble in fear. If such a war with Vietnam happens, it will possibly give China critical and vital combined arms and urban warfare fighting experience-which is needed for PLA troops fighting an urban fight in Taiwanese coasts and Taipei, possible by 2030, should reunification still unachieved by then.

China should also seek to discourage further Russian arms sales to Vietnam by agreeing to pay 3 billion US dollars or more to Russian defence industry annually for the next 10 years in exchange for Russian oath not to sell arms to Vietnam anymore. China couldn’t afford for Vietnam to be armed with advanced arms, considering the fact that Vietnam has vast urban warfare experience from fighting USA in the 60s and 70s-something which Chinese troops and commanders lacks from.

Yes, I'm sure sexagenarian and septagenarian vietnamese urban guerillas will be a great threat.

Why would Vietnam's urban warfare experience be dangerous to China? Do you think Vietnam is going to take over a chinese city? Or that China needs to occupy a Vietnamese city?

You seem to forget that China has experience fighting the Vietnamese in the late 70's and early 80's. Those experiences show that tanks aren't very useful on the sino-vietnamese border.

Finally, when was the last time you gave a merchant a lot of money and told them not to sell stuff to your neighbor? Did it work? Or did the merchant laugh all the way to the bank, with your money?

What is this nonsense? People who just want to rant really should just start a blog. Discussion forums are for discussion, and there is no scope or hope of that in this thread.

The idea that China needs to build up its ground forces to protect itself against Vietnam is, quite frankly, silly.

The REAL threat is those Mongolians. Type 59s' armor is just not adequate against a Mongolian anti-tank bow and arrow. The PLA should rebuild the Great Wall now. :china:

LOL,

on a more serious note, the great wall of China is an often misunderstood defense mechanism.

At the Ming dynasty, where the current great wall take form. It was built to defeat the mongols and the qing. Basing my judgement on Sun Tze's Art of War; the purpose of the great wall is not to keep the enemy out but to lock him down and deny him of his supplies when he is in.

The mongols were more mobile, greater man to man fighting skill than an average Chinese conscript. Where as, China had the strength of number which took time to mobilize.

So what the great wall did is present the mongols with 2 options, 1) siege the forts and maintain troops to keep the pass open while allowing the Chinese to mobilize, 2) penetrate the wall, leave the forts alone to plunder the wealth behind while doing so allow the wall to be reinforced and therefore closed; and allowing chinese field armies to assemble within cities and slowly herd the mongols back against the wall to be destroyed.

Back on to the Vietnam issue, tanks won't solve the issue. To give a credible threat to Vietnam, navel amphibious assault forces is the key. The US lost the vietnam war because the Chinese and Russians kept her supplied; while also allowing refuge in China.

If China can maintain a stalemate in northern Vietnam while the Chinese navy blockades the country and the air force gain air superiority; a significant marines landings across the entire Vietnamese coast will surely deplete most of Vietnam's war reserves while significantly disrupting the transport of munition and supplies to the northern troops.

A whole load of crap. So what if Vietnam have assess to a whole lot of pretty hardware? Look at Georgia... they are armed with US equipment too... how well did it fare against Russia? It is not what weapons and hardware you have but how good you could use the existing equipment.

Most of China's weapons and equipment are designed and manufactured by themselves, might not be as good (I emphasis on the word might) as the US equipment, but it showed the industrial might of China. As compared to Vietnam... they have to purchase weapons from US, and after these are used up, what then?

Just because Vietnam is buying some US equipment, then you think China should build more tanks... then one day, Taiwan again buy some more advance equipment from US, and China would have to match up by building more tanks and other hardware... isn't it falling back to the same game of arm racing?

Instead of improving the quality of your training, equipment and stuff, you suggest getting more weapons. I seriously doubt China is stupid enough to use that tactic or strategies of yours.

And the icing of the cream is, "Pay Russia to stop selling equipment to Vietnam."... I for one would like to be the arms dealer of Russia... getting paid for nothing. And by your logic, China should also pay US, Europe and better still... Singapore too, so they will not sell equipment to Vietnam too.

Haha I really appreciate you guys' sense of humor. I think we should close this thread and open a new one in the history section discussing the Great Wall's history and defense mechanisms.
