I've only seen a video from a while ago about China's navy and I remember their submarine fleet being quite poor. Nice to see it's changing. Not a navy person, I don't understand why modern navys don't just spam 200 subs instead of a bunch of frigates and cruisers.
SSBN and SSN cost between US$10 billion to $20 billion each. You are talking on why not spend more than 2,000 Billion dollars just on submarines?

Has it been confirmed that the PLAN sent electronic surveillance ships to the Persian/Arabian Gulf amidst the Iran/Israel/US conflict or has the rumor been discredited?

It was initially reported by several OSINT accounts on X but there hasn't been any photographic or satellite evidence to corroborate that claim.

What does everyone think about this timeline? If the prediction is correct, most of them are gonna be commissioned in H2 this year, especially in August. Too soon? There probably are more vessels under construction.

I feel like it’s pretty accurate, we know for a fact that the 003 will be commissioned sometime this year as reported by Chinese state TV

Where are you getting those figures from? Cost of Virginia class is $3-4b per hull and cost of Columbia class is $11b per hull (based on total program cost for 12 hulls, production cost certainly much less than $10b) For Russian subs, cost of Borei and Yasen class are both around onlu $1b per hull.

I have a curious thought all of a sudden. Let's assume, worst case scenario, that China's military tech today is on par with US tech 20 years ago. That may sound unflattering but think about this: a significant portion of the US military still uses tech from 20 years ago. for example: SPY-1 radar on the Burkes, MK41 VLS, LA class and early Virginias, Super Hornets. These form pretty much the bulk of the USN. Is it fair to say that even at a worst case scenario we as China military watchers can still feel pretty good about ourselves?

I would say China is at minimum 10-15 years in tech behind the US but they are rapidly catching up. In some areas like drones, missiles their at par but China is behind 10-15 years in navy and airforce though

yes but my question was: considering the US still uses significant amount of tech from 20 years ago, and we are just now catching up to that level, can we feel pretty good about this fact? due the fact that a significant portion of the US military is still 20 year old tech.

I mean, I would. China had no help in developing this and started much later than the US in this matter. Military modernization only started in around 2014
