Hmm... I see. I believe Deng did a fairly better job in this regard no?why not? like i said, you look at past leaders, even the best ones, have all messed this up. does Xi recognize this risk? I am certain that he does, but it doesn't mean that he can avoid it. Mao and Deng were all extremely cognizant of the succession question, neither of them did a great job on this, and same goes with many great emperors of the past. I think this is just the logic of power. When it is concentrated, the game becomes one of ass-kissing and you get the wrong guy. Not saying that Xi will absolutely mess up, I am just saying that the chances are not good.
Afterall, he was the one who architect of the current political system of transition of power, Check and balances, the 2 term limits for the president/leader and the unofficial age limit for leaders before retirement. All this to avoid abuse of power by one leader(many said he learned from looking at Mao's example). He did very well considering the situation China was in. Its incredible he was willing, persistent and able to carry out so many radical economic and political reforms in such a short period of time, especially so looking at the very dangerous and fragile period China was facing back then(many would have preferred to remain with the status quo and avoid any risk associated with such reforms). I actually believe China was so lucky to have had that man as leader before he died(especially considering his age and the many purges he suffered under Mao) , to me he is the most consequential leader China has had this past century. By contrast Chinese leaders have it far better or easier today, since things are more stable for China and the country far more prosperous and open, so they should be even more bold in carrying out reforms.
I hope Xi will carry on his legacy and do even better with political reforms especially, the worse mistake (and the easiest mistake to make for all humans) is to be tempted to remain in power for life, even more so when you are able to do so without any challenge/impediment on your way. How many humans on earth are capable of leaving power willingly by themselves meanwhile they can carry on if they want to? I will say very very few looking at history .
Let's see how Xi will handle this, hopefully he will know when to leave and start preparing his succession in a good way. I still want to believe he will do it better.
