Or has there been a change of plan since China had to remove Russia as an equal partner after the invasion of Ukraine and China also has her own engine the CJ2000 coming up fast.

I doubt C929 will use Russian engines anyways either it'll ship with CJ-2000 if progress is good or start with western engine.
I think it is likely the C929 will initially use a Rolls-Royce engine, similar to the A350's engines, and later CJ-2000.
I posted this here because PD-35 was originally developed for this Chinese aircraft. It might still be an option in case there are issues with getting Western engines and Chinese engine is delayed.
Still, the PD-35 is at least one year away from production. It needs to be tested in flight. This has not been funded yet, just ground tests. Given the Russian government still has not decided on the power level of the initial variant it possibly will be delayed to 2030.

SOYO said the PD-35's progress is slower than CJ-2000 so there basically no point of using a Russian engine at all, plus IMO the fuel efficiency with a Russian engine would make the aircraft uneconomical for any actual customers that aren't heavily subsidized by the government. It's either a RR engine or CJ-2000.
PD-35 would obviously be useful for C929s exported to Russia, which will not be able to use western engines.
Why not just use Chinese engines anyways then, plus Russia has their own little agenda with domestic aircraft that they are pushing and hence is unlikely to adopt C929/919 en masse. IMO C929's biggest global market would be in the ASEAN/South America market and potentially European depending on if this growing trend of Sino-EU relationship holds when C929 comes into mass production.
PD-35 is quite an advanced machine with BPR is over 10 and CMC material.. this engine was not only for CR929 but intend to replace AN-124 Ukrainian engines and for next gen Russian strategic airlifter.
CR929 Engine story is pretty interesting.
in 2015, NK-32 derivate proposed for CR929 propulsion but rejected by both COMAC and UAC
in 2017 both UEC and AECC signed a MOU for co-developing CR929 engine. but didn't materialize. at the same time, UEC finalized the PD-35 and COMAC was is final talks with AECC for CJ-2000.
PD-35 uses a similar technology to CFM Leap. With a bypass ratio of 10 it should more than compare well with the GE and RR engines in the 787 and A350 which have slightly lower bypass. It is closest in technology to the GE GEnx in the 787.
PD-14 uses previous generation materials. It has a bypass ratio of 8. So it should be worse than CFM Leap. But better than even the best CFM 56 engines.
When some people say PD-35 is just a scaled up PD-14 they don't have a clue what they are talking about. The PD-35 is a decade newer design made with materials unavailable to the Russian industry back then.

isn't PD-35 share same core as PD-14/PS-90 but with latest material and manufacturing techniques ..
