J-35A fighter (PLAAF) + FC-31 thread

If Flanker airframe production continues at about 40? per year, then in 2030, that would be about 500-600 J-16 in total.

And you're talking about teaming J-16s with J-20s.

The J-16s would be launching PL-17 missiles at long range.
You wouldn't want the J-16s to launch PL-15/16s, because that would require them to get closer and make them too vulnerable, as J-16s aren't stealthy.

So we're only looking at the J-16s launching a single long-range volley of PL-17, before the J-20 and J-35 close in with PL-15/16s.

If each J-16 can launch 4 PL-17 missiles, then 500 J-16 should be more than enough.

---

As for countering larger numbers of F-35 stealth fighters, the best method is to target the small number of airbases available and destroy those F-35s on the ground.
speaking of this, is there another plane that can use PL-17s that's in service right now?

I wouldn't automatically count out 4th gens against 5th gens. J-16 is much larger and has much more electrical power and a larger nose than F-35. If Chinese electronics, radar, and EW technology development continues to outpace that of the US, it is very possible that in the near future, J-16 backed by J-16D and AWACs can neutralize F-35s through sheer EM dominance.

It's not as if J-16s and F-35s are going to be fighting 1v1.

Obviously, PLAAF shouldn't count on this, and should hedge against all possibilities: but it may very well end up being the case.

I think modern PLA watching should take accounts like this one a bit more seriously, of course it’s fun and propaganda, but it doesn’t mean it is wrong…

No, accounts like this should not be taken seriously.

They throw things at the wall, and through passage of time, may eventually have elements of their "predictions" come true but they do not reflect any careful thinking genuine insider knowledge, and certainly lack posting discipline.

With the proper tactics J-16 can be used effectively against fifth gen. It is proven during one of the exercises. Took the pilots two sleepless nights to workout a tactic but it worked.

H-6?

If the J-16's primary function is going to be reduced to firing stand-off or super long range weapons, do you really need that many of them when the PLAAF also have the H-6s that does that?

No,for effective use of VLRAAM they should be launched at a supersonic speed. I believe I saw a picture where j-10c can launch pl-17, but a missile count of 2 is not enough.
