The devastating 2015 Nepal earthquake that killed thousands changed the lives of many in the Himalayan nation. But it was the beginning of a friendship for two girls who each lost a leg in the tremor.

Nirmala Pariyar and Khendo Tamang were 7 and 8 years old when they met at a hospital in Kathmandu after they were brought there for treatment. Both were injured during the April 25, 2015, earthquake, which damaged more than 1 million houses and buildings in Nepal.

Pariyar comforted Tamang. "You've lost one leg, and so have I. But we survived. Isn't that beautiful?" Pariyar said 10 years ago.
They shared the same hospital bed and supported each other. They went on to attend the same boarding school.

"Our friendship is still strong and she has been my biggest support even during the times when I am away from family," Pariyar said.
"When I sometimes miss my family and cry, she is always there for me," she added. "She has been not just a friend but like my own sister to me."

Ten years after the devastating earthquake, most of the buildings and houses that were damaged have been rebuilt. Schools and public buildings have been built to better safety standards.

Earthquakes are common in Nepal, which is covered mostly by mountain terrain and home to most of the highest peaks in the world.

Pariyar was pinned under a fallen metal gate and concrete wall after the quake. She was pulled out when people passing by saw her hair, and was transported to the hospital.

"I was unconscious but I was told one of my legs was barely attached to my body. They put the leg in a cardboard box and took me to the hospital," she said.

She regained consciousness at the hospital a week after the earthquake. A few days later, she met Tamang, who was brought in from her village east of the capital, Kathmandu.

It has taken months of surgery and rehabilitation to get them walking and performing everyday tasks. Both girls have been fitted with prosthetic legs, and often have to visit the disability rehabilitation center to get readjustments.

Both girls, now in their teenage years, have just finished the national high school exams and are planning their future.

Pariyar is considering majoring in science in junior college because that promises better prospects — but in her heart she wants to be a singer.

Stone carving, known as the art of "stone and blade", is a national intangible cultural heritage that originated in the Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 220) and has been passed down for over 2,000 years. Quyang stone carving, renowned for its intricate craftsmanship, features a wide range of materials such as marble, jade, wood, ivory, bronze, and stainless steel. The art includes various techniques such as full-round carving, openwork, hollow carving, and reliefs, with themes covering modern figures, garden sculptures and home decorations.

Hebei Xinte Garden Architectural Sculpture Intangible Heritage Workshop emerged based on the Quyang stone carving tradition. According to Gong Xupeng, a county-level inheritor of the craft, the workshop blends traditional skills with modern design trends and utilizes the "intangible heritage + internet" model to expand its market reach.

The workshop operates under the "employment-driven + heritage + market" model, offering training and job opportunities to impoverished individuals and skilled artisans. It serves as a strong platform for preserving and promoting Quyang stone carving.

To date, the workshop has employed over 30 master sculptors and provided jobs for more than 370 college graduates and skilled workers. With an investment exceeding 3.2 million yuan ($400,000), it has supported rural and industrial revitalization, helping 811 formerly impoverished households increase their income. It also offers skill training for local residents, raising their average annual income from 7,000 to 30,000 yuan.

Located just 47 km from the border, Sheyit Primary School is a remote village school that primarily works with children from the Kirgiz ethnic community. Under the "Go West" program, a voluntary service program in China's less-developed western region, Gao and other 22 college graduates now teach here. Hailing from across the country, their Mandarin accents may slightly differ, but they are all united by a single purpose -- to light up the path of knowledge for around 300 children.

"Most of their parents are herders or patrollers, so they rarely have time to care for their families," Gao said. "That's why these children love school so much. Some of them even come to study on weekends. I'm always surrounded by curious students with endless questions."

"When motivated students meet dedicated teachers, academic improvement is only a matter of time," said Jin Wenbin, the school Party chief, adding that the school has finally shed its long-standing position as the lowest-performing in Artux City.

Early this year, the school ranked among the top 15 in the city. Since 2023, it has consistently produced graduates who excelled in regional standardized exams, earning admission to Xinjiang's top middle schools under a funded initiative.

A couple holds a destination wedding in Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture, southwest China's Yunnan Province, May 10, 2025.(Xinhua)

The date of May 20 holds a special significance in China, as its Chinese pronunciation "520" resembles the phrase "wo ai ni," meaning "I love you." It is a peak time for marriage registrations, seeing long lines at marriage registries nationwide.

With China scrapping household registration rules for marriages earlier this month, couples are embracing a new "wedding plus travel" trend, merging their nuptials with vacation getaways.

The latest hassle-free marriage rule has made cross-region marriage registration more convenient, especially for those working outside their hometowns. According to a national population census in 2020, China's mobile population reached 376 million, including 125 million interprovincial migrants.

As the policy no longer requires people to register their marriage back home, young couples prefer to plan their weddings in their own way -- traveling to an ideal destination for a commemorative wedding, or a destination wedding.
