A deal wasn’t reached. Bessent said the talks have reached substantial progress. We don’t even know the details of the meeting. The pro Trump media space is already calling this a trade deal. They are jumping the gun trying to make Trump look good. But it’s not a deal. The last trade deal in Trumps first term took two years to negotiate.
The link I posted shows a video of Greer saying they've struck a deal with the Chinese.
GREER: "It's important to understand how quickly we were able to come to agreement which were that perhaps the differences were not so large as maybe thought." "That being said, there was a lot of groundwork that went into these two days... we're confident that the deal we struck with our Chinese partners will help us to resolve, work toward resolving that national emergency."

Who can trust Trump? It’s like Republicans who spin how slavery was the best thing to ever happen to Africans. They will say anything just to see the stock market go up on Monday because of "good" news. That's what Trump is relegated to where he's reliant on the market inching up on hope because his plans over tariffs failed and he can't admit it.

your logic doesn't make sense with all the mental gymnastics you are giving.

If it doesn't make any difference like you said, then the Chinese don't care and it wouldn't factor into their negotiations. Also if it didn't make a difference, why did trump initially push it up to 145% from 100% in the first place? To show that he means business?!?

Conversely if increasing tariffs to 145% does make a difference then decreasing it to 80% will also make a difference and again shows he caved.

Lol . How are you gonna spin logic?
correct. I don’t think China is factoring that into their negotiations. They said they are not going to play the numbers game.

145 or 80% makes no difference.

So it’s the equivalent of my wife’s IT support team saying “they are prioritizing it” after working on a ticket for two months?

What is the Chinese media saying?
It's middle of night now, media is sleeping.
But here is text drawn from a Zhong Sheng column (big deal) in the May 10 People's Daily before the negotiation.

Dialogue is essential for bridging differences, but it is unrealistic to expect a resolution through just one or two rounds of talks. China is fully aware of the complexities involved in negotiations. As an ancient Chinese saying goes, “Listen to their words and watch their deeds”—sincerity must be measured by actions. If the U.S. truly wishes to resolve issues through dialogue, it must confront the severe negative impacts of its unilateral tariffs on both itself and the global community, acknowledge international trade rules and fair principles, heed rational voices worldwide, and demonstrate genuine goodwill by correcting its wrong practices—rather than saying one thing and doing another, or shifting positions unpredictably. China remains open to dialogue, with unwavering patience, strategic resolve, and the confidence to see this through. Whether through confrontation or negotiation, China’s determination to safeguard its development interests, uphold international fairness and justice, and defend the global trade order remains unchanged.

Why are they so desperate to have the appearance of winning? Heavy on emotions and theatrics, severely lacking in meaningful details that actually matter. If it was China tripping over itself to declare a "deal", it would have been interpreted by US pundits as China weakness by appealing to domestic audience about trivial symbolic wins. If Trump does it, I bet the MAGAs would praise him as a negotiating genius even without any evidence or details. This is the problem of democracy without accountability, it's the appearance that matters more than substance.
