Re: New Generation Fighter

It's a traditional Chinese poem the author wrote to celebrate the anniversary of 611 institute:

所庆有怀

(一)
弹指光阴四十年,如今沧海换桑田。
科研旺盛精英聚,型号纷繁捷报传。
收益提升增笑口,人居改善酿欢颜。
更谋长远向西去,再续辉煌写巨篇。
basically said 40 years have passed, a few new projects also have triumphed.
briefly, the 40 years hard working has paved the road to the blue sky.
after abandoned the bumpy J-9 project, J-7III finally took the sky.
Under the hostile Russia and US threat, dragon flied on 3/23, 1998.
time has passed year 2000, new bloods will surpass the past and forge the divine weapon to protect the sky.

So, the focus of this poem is the sentence I use bold type and underlined: could that be the new generation fighter (or was J-10's first fly in 1998?)?
J-10 flew in late 1997. It's known is the "Vigorous Dragon". So yeah, that refers to the J-10.

Actually I believe the dragon the author is talking about is the J-10. The J-10 is also known as "Vigourous Dragon", first flight was at 23-March-1998, thus it actually connect with everything in the peom.

Re: New Generation Fighter

This news from a Hong Kong newspaper.

The Hong Kong newspaper, citing a Taiwan intelligence source, claimed the 5th generation figher is ready, the pilots are now busy training.

Maiden flight will be taken place in small scale soon, and the figher will first equip 24th Division etc.

The fighter will offer huge leap over PLAAF's existing fighters, performance-wise it will be a counter to F-22 and get the 4S features (stealth, supercruise, etc).

Dont know how reliable the source is, anyway

Sounds like the usual B.S. Nowadays I usually avoid reading posts on 5th generation Chinese fighters in Chinese BBS because they are usually nothing but speculations. The PLA is very stringent regarding security and we probably won't get any reliable info until the prototypes are ready to fly.

There's a reason why Taiwan intelligence would release this kind of news about Chinese new generation fighter, Taiwan is trying hard to persuade America that it is necessary to sell them F-16 C/D.

Such a pitch would only make sense if they were soliciting for F-35s. If China really did have a 5th generation fighter ready F-16s wouldn't do squat, which deflates the believability of such a claim. It's probably just made up.

I guess it still would be better than flying around in what they have now. Although it is interesting how the tables turned and PRC is now sitting on the superior military technology. How will the balance look in twenty years one might ask

Actually I do not think the PRC is sitting on a superior military technology even in near future. The reason why the US or the western nations didn't field a more superior aircraft than the F-22 is because they up till now do not feel the need to do it.

And everyone is watching the Russian's T-50 (which clearly is a disappointment)... the Chinese 5th generation aircraft would be a threat... but first, it is so new and up till now, no one had seen it fly or know for sure its capability, so there really is no need to field another F-22 type aircraft or upgrade the existing F-22 aircraft. If truely the Chinese aircraft is better or at least on par... then you can be sure that the American will cough out newer version of the F-22 or an entirely new aircraft pretty quickly, afterall they have the technology, experience and specialists to do it. Plus they have lots of money (even as of now.)

Your reasoning has some merits, but you have to keep this in mind, percentage-wise, the US's military spending at the moment is already return to near its cold-war, arm-racing level, so there is not much more room for improvement for them anyway, I think the two unnecessary wars (iraqi and afghanistan) really hurt them badly, and save us alot of time to catch up them.

In contrast, China's economy grow at a much higher rate and their military spending, percentage-wise, is barely higher than that of Japan, and far less than even the world-average, so there is alot of more room for improvement.

As for the fighter beyond 5th generation, as I have already posted before, I think the gap would have been much narrower since they have been investing huge money in that area since a very long time ago, probably not much later than that of the US.

I think he was talking about the PRC vs Taiwan, not PRC vs the US.
