You know the US is in the acceptance stage regarding China 7nm development and Huawei , BUT what will happen when Huawei introduced its P70 PRO powered by SMIC N+3 5nm chip? will they able to swallowed it or become more hysteria? That's the 6 million dollar question cause it destroyed the narrative of US semiconductor supremacy, the psychology effect will be huge, the Chinese with his hand tie behind his back is able to outcompete and produced an indigenous 5nm chip ahead of them.

P70 will not be using 5nm chip. At best, it will use a slightly improved version of 9000S.

Psychology effect is not relevant. What will be relevant is how Huawei continues to work around handicap of not having access to TSMC

Huawei’s GPU computing power is in short supply and prices are rising

According to Jiemian News, as the gap between supply and demand for domestic computing power expands, Huawei's computing power is becoming a new product snapped up by the market after NVIDIA.

On March 21, reporters learned from Huawei’s internal and purchaser channels that Huawei’s computing power GPU shipments in 2023 will be approximately 100,000 pieces, and production capacity will increase to hundreds of thousands of pieces in 2024. However, the current order demand has reached above Millions of tablets. In January this year alone, hundreds of thousands of orders have been placed.

Another Huawei insider told reporters that there are currently many new customers placing orders. Although production capacity has been increased, demand still exceeds supply, and it will take a long time to wait for goods.

The price of Huawei’s computing power is also rising. According to information from multiple agents, the computing power GPU launched by Huawei in August 2023 has a listing price of about 70,000 yuan. It has experienced at least two price increases since then, and the current market price is around 120,000 yuan.

The reporter learned that Huawei currently has three customer echelons for its computing power. The first category is mainly the three major operators and government customers, the second category is mainly Internet customers, and the third category is other companies.

US official notes Korean firms' move not to sell used chip equipment to China as 'encouraging'

A senior U.S. official on Thursday portrayed Korean companies' reported move to stop selling used semiconductor manufacturing equipment to China as "encouraging," as Washington has been seeking tighter export controls on key technologies amid an intensifying Sino-U.S. rivalry.

Alan Estevez, under secretary of commerce for industry and security, made the remarks in his written statement to a hearing of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, entitled "Countering China on the World Stage: Empowering American Businesses and Denying Chinese Military Our Technology.

"It has been encouraging to see allies and partners recognizing the threat the PRC and others pose and taking appropriate actions to address security concerns regarding semiconductors and other emerging technologies, through their domestic legal systems," he said in the statement. PRC stands for China's official name, the People's Republic of China.

"It has been reported that key Korean firms intend to no longer sell used semiconductor manufacturing equipment to the PRC. Also, the governments of the Netherlands and Japan have announced and implemented controls on semiconductor manufacturing equipment," he noted.

Last week, the Financial Times reported that Samsung Electronics and SK hynix stopped selling their old chip producing equipment as Washington has called on them to come in tune with its semiconductor export controls.

During the hearing, Estevez pointed out that the United States has been seeking controls on the servicing and components of equipment already sent to China before export restrictions went into effect.

"I am racking up frequent flyer miles, talking to our allies about what they are doing, how they are doing it and making sure that we have parity between U.S. companies and the companies in our allied nations so that we are all having similar controls," he said.

At a forum in December, Estevez said that the U.S., Korea and other allies were in "preliminary" talks over the idea of creating a new export control regime to prevent cutting-edge technologies, including semiconductors and quantum computing, from being transferred to potential adversaries. I guess (considering also the price) that this "GPU" is the Huawei Ascend 910B,

.

The take away for me is that Huawei already sold 100,000 chips (that is huge in itself) and is going to increase production this year by multiple times, this is another huge news. It means SMIC can scale up, both in capacity and in yield. Ascend chip is bigger than the Kirin used for smartphones, so you can increase production only when yields are good enough.

The key question is with which kind of equipment SMIC is scaling up capacity? We can expect expanded capacity is in part due to yield improvement, but to scale up so much, from 100.000 to "hundreds of thousands", SMIC has to expand real capacity too, with new machines and new production lines at 7nm.

We know that 28nm has been conquered last year, but we know very little about localization on sub 28nm nodes. The big Chinese manufacturers remain mum on this, although we can speculate that the key ones NAURA, AMEC, Hwatsing, ACM Research, Kingstone, etc that officially reached fully 28nm coverage already last year or even earlier, are now actively validating/batch selling in the sub 28 nm range.

If Chinese fabs cannot buy old US equipment, they will buy new Chinese equipment instead, so I really don't understand how this news can be "encouraging". To me, this just shows how desperate US officials are, at this point they can just cope hard, really hard.

Huawei/SMIC revenue will increase 120 billion RMB just by GPU alone.

Damn.. Huawei is going to get NVIDIA-rich just by selling AI GPUs lol.

Now add its phone, communication divisions..
