Sorry but all this talk over popular music still goes back to the soft power debate. Remember because Kris Wu's handlers forgot about his birthday, they changed the release date of his album to a later date to match his birthday but the dates in other markets like the US didn't change? His Asian fans went through US outlets to buy his album early and he beat the likes of Ariana Grande who released an album the same day and Lady Gaga on the charts. Asians fall into the Western mindset where Western whites buying an album is more valuable than anyone else. It doesn't matter that more people bought Kris Wu's album than Ariana Grande's.

Can K-pop do anything independent? Do K-pop artists write their own music? Can they play their own instruments beside the stereotype of Asians playing the piano? Individuals in K-pop are going to have short expiration dates especially when they grow out of their effeminate boy look. It's going to be like when I once glanced into a nail saloon and saw a middle-aged immigrant looking Asian man doing a young white woman's nails. There was something wrong with that. These K-pop stars are going to be has-beens really quick. K-pop is a corporate controlled concoction. There is no independent music scene in South Korea. That's why you'll see suicides because they'll be replaced easily and quickly.

Every time I see these soft power debates come up, what's wrong with those advocating that China/Asians should seek soft power? They're always putting the cart before the horse. It means they don't see the music as most important. They're just trying use music as a vehicle to be liked. And you wonder why Asians aren't successful in music? Everything about it is superficial because being liked is the only point of music to them.
In my opinion, there is nothing wrong with K-Pop. There are many catchy K-Pop songs and I used to be a big fan of K-Pop groups like Red Velvet. However, K-Pop is essentially a subset of American popular music and hip-hop. It doesn't sound unique at all to me. Despite its popularity, I doubt it'll influence the world in any meaningful way.

On the other hand, German and Italian classical music, Russian romantic music, French impressionist music, jazz, hip-hop, rock and roll, American popular music, etc. changed the world. I hope China can make a similar contribution to the world of music. I absolutely adore Chinese 古风 music and I hope that Chinese artists can combine it with other genres like classical music, popular music, etc.

Sir, my only son who just turn 18 have the look of a K-pop artist had been developing his physical appearance by toning his body, so in way it had a positive influence. My concern early on with the popularity of K-pop among the youth that he may turn gay because of using make-up among the male artist....lol My fear is unfounded it turn out that traditional culture and environment play a leading role in molding todays youth.
A lot of it also rests on what kind of role model the father is... so props to you sir

From what I understand, classical music is the West is either dying or dead.

In America, I believe classical music is largely dead in most states. I happened to be in Florida a while ago, and not one single classical music radio station I could find. Classical music is probably dead or a living fossil in Florida. Doubt that is the only state without a classical music radio station.

Some white people claim that the Chinese, Koreans, and Japanese will keep classical music alive. They could be right.

I personally believe there will be an explosion of Chinese talent into ancient Chinese instruments, and Western classical music, in the coming years.

Most people are forced to only like those who their media orders them to like. Its a sad state of existence.

Chinese are free to choose among the entire media market. Chinese stars organically rise up among Bilibili casters and are chosen by the people. A very different model than the top down command media that many outside China are used to.

@emblem21 brought up a good example, Hanser. She has 4M+ followers on bilibili and is a VA for Honkai Star Rail. Was she hand picked by the corporations or media? No.

I also follow 多多poi, 泠鸢yousa, 西瓜君, SING, etc.

20M+ view music video from SING:

Japanese singers have even made their own version:

Both Japanese singers have their own bilibili channels, that's how much emphasis they place on the Chinese market.
That state of affairs will gradually reverse. Or suddenly if US commits a major mistake.

US is just way more controlling and "grabby" in media among the areas they influence. But said control ultimately costs money and hollows out the industry. I think I speak for everyone when I say we don't want our own Hollywood at home, not with the rampant pedophilia, nepotism, creative stagnation and corruption.

China has built up tons of its own high quality productions, especially in the grassroots sector. What they need to own the global market is more exposure. At some point, measures to keep the west out from the internet will be removed. Then, it will be the west who will be forced to worry about keeping Chinese influence out.

What should be focused on is neither domestic nor foreign productions, but the quality and health of the industry. Products of great quality will always earn great money and inspire large followings.

The Wuhan Municipal Emergency Management Bureau issued a statement, stating that the Wuhan Earthquake Monitoring Center affiliated to the Bureau was attacked by an overseas organization.

An expert group composed of the National Computer Virus Emergency Response Center and 360 Company found that the cyber attack was initiated by overseas government-backed hacker organizations and criminals. Preliminary evidence shows that the cyber attack on the Wuhan Earthquake Monitoring Center came from the United States.

CIA and NSA, the usual suspects.
