TSMC is getting lots of orders from Chinese chip designers still.

I don’t know why people complain about this. Are Chinese companies suppose to magically poof chips into existence? Ramping up localization, expansion, and production takes time. We know that SMIC does make some but that capacity is likely reserved for important projects and leading companies. Not to mention that 1 or 2 years ago during a call SMIC said they could only fill 10% of domestic demand at that time.

I just hope the US doesn't get crazier with its FDPR

true. SMIC is under process to increase the production capacity of 7nm process and awaiting for ASML advance DUVi deliveries. 2000i/2050i. sanctions will implement after these machines deliver to China.

I wonder what that percentage is today.

Huawei and Inspur push GaN, opening trillion-level market

GaN is playing an increasingly important role in the field of server power supplies. Today, "Experts Say" will bring you 3 content services in this field and analyze why GaN is favored by data centers. For details, please read below look.
Huawei, Inspur and other enterprises
The server adopts GaN

Many product cases prove that GaN has great potential in the field of data centers and servers:
Inspur information: G7 server adopts GaN
On May 12, 2023, Inspur Information announced that the performance of two products of its G7 server series topped the SPEC performance test list, and the products of this series equipped with GaN technology in terms of hardware design .

It is reported that the models of the two products are NF5280G7 and NF8480G7. Thanks to gallium nitride technology, their product performance has increased by 208% and 232% respectively compared with the previous generation , and the evaluation results ranked first in all scenarios.
Inspur Information G7 server is the first in the industry to develop and support 3.2KW gallium nitride titanium power supply, the power density reaches the highest in the industry 100W/in³, the loss is reduced by 30% , and the efficiency of ultra-titanium gold can be achieved between 20% and 50% of the business load
.
Inspur Information was established in 1998. At present, their cumulative shipments of complete cabinet servers have exceeded 100,000 nodes, and their market share has exceeded 70% . In addition to being widely used in Internet companies at home and abroad, they have achieved large scale in industries such as finance, transportation, and energy. Batch deployment.

● Huawei: Server power supply adopts GaN

In November 2020, Huawei released a new generation of "Titanium Platinum Series Server Power Supply". The main features of this series of products are: high efficiency, high density, and intelligence.

By using technologies such as GaN, high-frequency soft switching, and high-frequency magnetics, the efficiency of Huawei's platinum server power supplies can reach 94.5% under common operating conditions (20% load), which is 4.5 percentage points higher than the industry. The peak efficiency of the titanium server power supply reaches 96% , which greatly reduces the power consumption of servers and IDCs.

SHENZHEN, China (Reuters) - China's Huawei Technologies is plotting a return to the 5G smartphone industry by the end of this year, according to research firms, signalling a comeback after a U.S. ban on equipment sales decimated its consumer electronics business.

Huawei should be able to procure 5G chips domestically using its own advances in semiconductor design tools along with chipmaking from Semiconductor Manufacturing International Co (SMIC), three third-party technology research firms covering China's smartphone sector told Reuters.

The research firms, citing their own industry sources, believe Huawei's EDA software could be used with SMIC's N+1 manufacturing process to make chips at the equivalent of 7 nm, the powerful semiconductors typically used in 5G phones.

The forecast yield rate of less than 50% means that 5G chips are "going to be costly", said Doug Fuller who researches chips at the Copenhagen Business School.

"I guess if Huawei wants to eat the cost they can do this, but I don't see such chips as price competitive," Fuller said.

Don't worry, I am pretty sure that they will be able to make it competitive. These guys are relentless.
