Turkmenistan acquires Chinese passive radar DWL002

Turkmenistan, once a Soviet Socialist Republic and a country in Central Asia, continues to rely on Chinese equipment to modernize its defense. The most recent is the DWL002passive radar system, which is designed to reinforce some of the country's air defense capabilities.

Designed by the Southwest China Research Institute of Electronic Equipment (SWIEE), also known as Institute 29 of the Chinese Electronic Group CETC, the DWL002 emits no waves and operates by capturing and analyzing low frequency civilian waves, mainly TV and radio broadcasts, to detect aerial, naval or terrestrial sources of radiation, hence its name "passive radar".

The system consists mainly of a main station and two vehicle-mounted sub-stations deployed remotely from one another. The location of the targets essentially passes through the technique based on the difference in time of arrival (TDOA) long base.

If the customer also wants the target altitude data, a fourth station could be integrated.

Model of the passive radar system DWL002

Given the exploited frequencies (UHF and VHF), many observers associate this kind of passive radar with the detection of flying objects VLO ( Very Low Observable ), in other words "stealth". But its use is not limited to that alone.

Historically, the development of this type of complementary detection means in China dates back to the end of the Gulf War to meet the operational needs of the Chinese military in the new tactical terminology "Three targets to hit and three categories of defense" (三打 三 防) of the time, namely:

  • Hitting Stealth Aircraft
  • Hit cruise missiles
  • Hitting combat helicopters
  • Defend against precision strikes
  • Defend against electronic interference
  • Defend against recognition and surveillance
It is therefore interesting to see that Turkmenistan - which has already acquired many Chinese anti-aircraft equipment such as the YLC-18 radar for low-altitude 3D surveillance, the YLC-2V radar for high-level 3D acquisition altitude, as well as three different types of short-to-long-range Sol-Air missiles, FM-90 , KS-1A and FD-2000 - demonstrated the need to provide such a detection system on their territory while it a priori, no military and territorial pretension towards its neighbors.

Anyway, according to the article published yesterday on the site of SWIEE, the delivery of passive radar DWL002 in Turkmenistan started since last year. A validation team was sent on site, in late September this year, to check all the installation sites of the system.

It will also be noted that the will to build closer ties in defense and security between the two countries, manifested by the increasing endowment of Chinese weapons, which reveals, in part, the strategy of China on this region "Buffer" potentially sensitive from a geopolitical point of view.

HENAN Diesel Industry Ltd. (HND) released a news that states four CHD622V20STC engines were dispatched to an overseas customer on Oct. 25. 2017 .

It is the first delivery of this engine model. STC stands for Sequential Turbo Charging. Comparing to earlier versions of CHD622V20, STC engine has improved the performance at low load region.

These engines are ordered by Russia, possible for the building of Project 21631Buyan-M corvette or Project 22460 patrol ship. The first order of 8 CHD622V20 engines for two 21631 corvettes was issued in 2015. The first batch of four CHD622V20 was shipped on Jan. 08 2016.

I can't find the total number of the engines Russia has ordered and received. Early 2017, HND claimed it had received a following order of 14 CHD622V20 from Russia. There could be an order also in 2016.

OK, for British, every foreign business is overseas. Later I'll refer Russia as an "overland" customer of China even the cargo can still be transported through sea route.

wondering whether China would use this engine to power 056 series. How this engine performance compare to SEMT Pielstick PA6-STC ?
