China's SCS Strategy Thread

The flexing of muscles, the rhetoric, disagreements, antagonistic actions are inching the region and perhaps the world towards hostilities, and eventually God forbid - War. It is not looking good with recent trade wars between US and China, US withdrawing RIMPAC invite to China, and now Trump's cancelling the Singapore summit with North Korea's Kim scheduled on 12 June 2018. Confucius "When it is obvious that goals cannot be reached, don't just adjust the goals, adjust the action steps".

I hope China will stay stay within so called first island though

Why? Why should China stay within the first island chain?

It's the stated goal of China and PLAN to become a blue-water navy, and a global navy. In fact, even today, PLAN goes on regular patrols in India Ocean and sends ships for friendly visit all over the world. As the world's top trading nation and with investments globally, China has as much reason as any nation, if not more, to have a strong global navy.

Maybe I misunderstood you. Do you want to elaborate your points?

I don't log on here to fight so I'm going to leave it at that

Well I think he didnt understand you (nor did I) because that's a pretty strange thing to say... China's South China Sea claim line has been in continuous use since 1947 and all of "China's Artificial Islands" date back to outposts built in 1988, except one which dates back to 1992. Chiang Kai Shek also built a base in the Spratly islands in operation from 1956 to present. Since China does not have any similarly pre-existing claims in the second island chain, why would they build bases there?

EXERCISES BRING NEW WEAPONS TO THE PARACELS

PUBLISHED: MAY 24, 2018

Satellite imagery from May 12 shows the deployment of several new weapons systems to China’s base on Woody Island in the Paracels. These new military platforms, under blue and red covers in the imagery, have been placed down the beach from the HQ-9 surface-to-air missile systems, under brown covers, that China

Since they are covered, it is difficult to definitively identify the new platforms, but they likely include truck-mounted surface-to-air or anti-ship cruise missiles and accompanying radars. The platforms were likely placed on the island as part of

that took place on May 9, though

has shown that they were still present as of May 20. This suggests that the platforms could be there to stay, just as the HQ-9s that were originally sent to Woody as part of an exercise

Looking more closely, it appears that there are 20 new vehicles in total on the island’s northern beach. Those under the red covers are wired together in two distinct groups. The group farthest west appears to consist of two larger vehicles (perhaps anti-air or anti-ship missiles systems on transporter erector launchers (TELs), though they seem to be shorter than the HQ-9s to the east), two smaller vehicles (perhaps a different missile system), and a large radar truck. The group in the middle consists of another radar truck and two of the smaller vehicles. The blue covers likely consist of various support vehicles.

Aside from these new deployments on the north shore of the island, China has also deployed what appears to be two trucks and four covered vehicles on the east side of Woody Island. These are smaller than the platforms under the red covers on the north, and they don’t appear to be wired together in any way. They are roughly the same size as the

In addition to these new platforms, China also deployed J-11 combat aircraft to the island as part of its military exercises. One J-11 is parked near the end of the island’s runway in the May 12 photo while more are likely inside of the hangars built along the airstrip. J-11s have been deployed to Woody Island on several occasions in the past, including as recently as

China warns US warships to leave South China Sea

The Chinese army acted immediately and dispatched warships to warn US warships to leave, ‍China's Ministry of National Defense said on Sunday, in response to two US warships' entry into the South China Sea.

On May 27, two US Navy warships, Higgins, a guided-missile destroyer and Antietam, a guided-missile cruiser, arbitrarily entered waters surrounding China's Xisha Islands.

The defense ministry said that the Xisha Islands are an inherent part of China's territory. China resolutely opposes the US actions which go against China’s laws and relative international laws.

The Chinese army is determined to strengthen naval and air combat readiness, improve defense levels, safeguard national sovereignty and security and safeguard regional peace and stability, the ministry said.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry also responded to this, saying that China will continue to take all necessary measures to defend its national sovereignty and security.

You brought up an interesting point on Palau.

Palau is only 1000KM from Guam.

Or suppose China was to buy an atoll in the deep Pacific?

Or maybe the Solomons or Papua New Guinea might be interested?

Or are there any unclaimed submerged atolls that China could claim for itself?

But I doubt China will do so, unless the strategic environment gets really bad.

But I think that is unlikely to happen as China is at the centre of the Asian trading network and is the economic anchor for the region.
